Château Léoville-Poyferré
About Chateau Léoville-Poyferré
Chateau Léoville-Poyferré has emerged as perhaps the second most important St. Julien estate behind Léoville las Cases. The property can trace its history all the way back to 1638, but that history is a tortuous path of ownership and name changes as part of what came to be called the "Léoville" estate. The Cuvelier family purchased this Château in 1920, and it remains in their stewardship to this day in the form of Sara Lecompte-Cuvelier, niece of Didier who oversaw some remarkable improvements to the estate during the 1980s and onwards. The team is comprised of some truly masterful oenologists, including the original superstar consultant Michel Rolland - Léoville-Poyferré was in fact only his second-ever consulting role, and he has now been at the property for over 40 years!
The Vineyard and the Winemaking
Léoville-Poyferré has always been and remains different in spirit to its siblings. Overseeing 60ha estate with some wonderful plots in the 'Grand Clos' bordering Las Cases, the estate is also constituted of plots splitting up over much of St-Julien, meaning that Poyferré has some of the most varied terroirs in the entire region, and certainly the most diverse of the incredible triumvirate.
One of the very first estates in the region to carry out malolactic fermentation in oak barrels, this has always been a forward-thinking and innovative producer. Today, optical sorting tables are used in the advanced winery where vinification occurs on fruit from very low-yielding plots - 35hl/ha compared to the Bordeaux average of 45hl/ha.
A higher proportion of Merlot in the blend (and in the vineyard) than is typical for St-Julien yields results only to be expected stylistically. The wine is rounded, rich and generous; however, as Cabernet Sauvignon still dominates, Léoville Poyferré retains the stunning freshness, acidity and structure to be expected from the greatest expressions of the appellation.

Wine Advocate (87)The 1961 is very good but not in the top class of wines from this vintage. Certainly rich, flavorful, and concentrated with fruit, this wine represents a rather rare phenomenon for Poyferre during a period of mediocrity. Dark ruby, with an attractive cedary, spicy, mature bouquet, on the palate, the 1961 Leoville-Poyferre is deep, supple, ripe, and long, but fully mature. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 3/80. |

Jancis Robinson (17.5)Dark crimson. Strong lead-pencils nose. Then racy and polished and very flattering with well-managed tannins. Stands out among the 1995 St-Juliens for its sophistication – with concentration. |

Leoville Poyferre 2002 has more structured than usual. There are stylish light aromas of black cherry, cassis, lead and some spice. The palate has great weight and balance. Flavours of blackcurrant, liquorice and espresso are well integrated with the dense tannins.

Jeb Dunnuck (96)Gorgeous stuff and certainly one of the gems in the vintage, the 2003 Château Léoville Poyferré reveals a healthy ruby/plum hue with no signs of bricking. Ripe currants, sappy tobacco, cedar pencil, and minty herbs all define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied on the palate, with a layered, round, lush texture. Its tannins are soft and beautifully integrated, and it has terrific balance and a gorgeous finish. |

Wine Advocate (93)Along with Leoville Las Cases and a few others, this is among the stars of the appellation. Made in a more floral, supple, Margaux-like style, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 Leoville Poyferre exhibits sweet, broad flavors, and plenty of tannin lurking beneath the surface. However, the abundant cherry, black currant, licorice, and smoke notes obscure the tannic clout. This rich, powerful, broad beauty should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and last for two decades. |

Wine & Spirit Magazine (95)This wine's heady rush of flavor gave one taster goosebumps. She called it sexy. "Formidable." Other technical descriptions included "the shazam," "has zazz," and "unprintable. That's some serious s#¡?." At the en primeur tastings, this appeared to be chunky and superripe. Now it's massive, with dark extract and exotic spice, a sophisticated wine that ends on sweetness, bitter chocolate and dark berry fruit. With all the flash, it will give a lot of pleasure as a young wine, but it has the plump Poyferré terroir drive to sustain that pleasure for years to come. |

Wine Enthusiast (95)94-96 Barrel sample. A beautiful wine, with its fresh wood, lively blackcurrant juice flavors, and subtle tannins. It has a lift and liveliness to it, which sits easily over the firm structure. |

Bordeaux | 2 | 100 (JD) | $2,209.60 | |||||
Jeb Dunnuck (100)The greatest wine I’ve ever tasted from this address is the 2009 Léoville Poyferré, which is a step up over both the 2000 and the 2010. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and the balance Cabernet Franc that hit 13.9% alcohol, it offers everything you could ask of a wine and reveals a saturated purple color as well as incredible notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, lead pencil, exotic Spices, and dried flowers. Incredibly full-bodied, super concentrated, deep, and opulent, yet still pure, fresh, and lively, it has sweet tannin and a hedonistic vibe that hides its underlying structure. Drink it anytime over the coming three decades. |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)I continue to absolutely love the 2010 Château Léoville Poyferré, and it certainly ticks all my boxes. This deep purple-hued beauty boasts phenomenal notes of crème de cassis, smoky tobacco, graphite, and leather. With full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mouthfeel, and ripe, polished tannins, it brings that rare mix of opulence and elegance and is an utter joy to drink. It needs a healthy decant if drinking any time soon and has another 3-4 decades of overall longevity. Drink 2025-2065. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)A dark, fleshy wine, the Léoville Poyferré 2012 is round, succulent and deeply expressive. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha, graphite and lavender are fused together in an effortless, silky Saint-Julien built on texture. Striking and totally beautiful, the 2012 will be ready to deliver its charms early. All the elements are in the right place. This is a gorgeous showing from Léoville-Poyferré. The 2012 is perhaps not an epic wine, but is gorgeous today and should provide considerable pleasure over the next 15-20 years. The blend is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. |
