Jean-Noel Gagnard
Domaine Jean-Noel Gagnard is based in Chassange-Montrachet, Burgundy. Jean-Noel’s daughter, Caroline l’Estime took over the estate and has really fine tuned it. Their small team focus on the terroir. They make four excellent cuvees that display some of the most elegance and richness in the Chassagne

Vinous (92)The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet La Boudriotte 1er Cru has a very seductive bouquet. Touches of candy floss, orange zest and French patisserie do not obscure the terroir expression. The palate is well balanced with a tangy, marmalade-tinged entry, one of the more saline expressions of the vintage. Fine definition on the quite strict finish. Excellent. |

Vinous (92)The 2010 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru from Jean-Noel Gagnard, out of magnum, is quite deep in color, although not premoxed. It has an open bouquet of white flowers, yellow plum and orange pith, nicely defined if just needing a little more mineralité. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity, lovely walnut and hazelnut notes rendering it quite Meursault-like, and plenty of weight and concentration toward the finish. I do not estimate this to be a long-term Bâtard, so don’t hesitate to pull the cork soon. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2010 white burgundy tasting in London. |

Burghound (93)A notably ripe and ever-so-mildly exotic but not really surmature nose consists primarily of spicy white orchard fruit along with hints of wood, white flowers and viognier. The rich, opulent and vibrant broad-shouldered flavors possess lovely complexity while delivering excellent length on the powerful and focused if somewhat linear finish. This will almost certainly add body with age, and it appears to be structured for mid to even longer-term cellaring. |

Vinous (94)The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from a one-third hectare of vines of which half is en friche (fallow), so only a couple of barrels are produced. It has a very delineated bouquet with enticing citrus peel, crushed pebbles, Clementine and blackcurrant leaf aromas. The palate is very well balanced with impressive concentration and slightly viscous on the entry. Quite rich for a Bâtard-Montrachet yet poised and mineral-driven on the finish. What a wonderful Bâtard-Montrachet - and I confess that I could not resist a cheeky morning sip! |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)Sample taken from barrel and tank. Clear mid yellow. The bouquet is very backward today but there is great class to the fruit on the palate, with a little honeydew melon suddenly surging forth at the finish. Multi-layered, at the very least adequate acidity with a very long aftertaste. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Dec 2024. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)5*s 34 hl/ha. Fine pale lemon, with a very distinct Caillerets nose - all the stones you could want - to support the pure white fruit. Impeccable density on the palate, now including some bright yellow plum fruit, racy acidity, layers on layers here, boding well for the future. Perfect balancing acidity, this has the power to age extremely well. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)Sample taken from barrel and tank. Mid to full lemon yellow. A remarkably intense bouquet with a sizzling crystalline character. There is just a touch of the richer character with a little honeysuckle note, but Caillerets’ intense minerality is very present. Still a baby. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Dec 2024. |
