The 1999 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru from Jean-Marc Roulot is poured from magnum. Silvery in hue and showing little age, it has a precise, Puligny-like bouquet with subtle scents of dandelion and wet stone. The terroir really shines through here. The palate is very saline on the entry that gets the taste-buds flowing, just a hint of crème brûlée and lemon peel furnishing the clean and precise finish. I suspect that the larger format here renders this a little more youthful than in bottle, but it is still an outstanding Meursault from Roulot, one that has many years ahead. Tasted at Taillevent restaurant in Paris.$1,850.00 -

As the best examples of Perrieres always do, this just oozes class, minerality, sophistication and refinement. Powerful and explosive aromas burst from the glass yet there is nothing heavy or forced and the flavors display awesome intensity as this just etches itself into the palate and stains it as well. The length was so good that I could taste this the next morning and the complexity is literally stunning. Another genuinely great Roulot Perrieres.$7,290.00 -

Bright pale yellow. Soft citrus fruits and crushed rock on the musky, slightly reduced nose. Rich, perfumed and tightly coiled, with a terrific core of acidity intensifying the orange, floral and mineral flavors. Offers compelling cut and concentration but this infant will require several years of aging. Wonderfully refined Perrieres of grand cru class.$2,150.00 -

The 2009 Meursault Perrieres is a mode of coolness. It possesses tons of energy in Reserve. With time in the glass hints of slate, crushed rocks, lime and white flowers start to take shape, suggesting the direction this profound wine is headed in over the coming years. The Perrieres is simply breathtaking for its clarity and precision. Like a finely cut diamond, there is always something new to discover. The finish is beyond eternal. This is not an immediate wine, but rather a bottle that will handsomely repay patience. I hope to have a chance to revisit this in a few years’ time, as it is nothing short of utterly profound. Anticipated maturity: 2015+.$1,335.00 -
Vinous (94)
The 2010 Meursault Perrières wraps around the palate with huge, seamless layers of fruit. It boasts stunning textural depth and pure richness from start to finish. There is so much sheer intensity of the fruit that the minerality appears virtually hidden. Although the density of the fruit is impressive, this isn't a particularly elegant or refined Perrières by Roulot standards, at least not today. Roulot explains that the Perrières was the last of his wines to finish its malolactic fermentation. In my view it is a bit heavy, although the truth is that most growers would kill to have a wine like this in their cellars.$1,600.00 -
(3x75cl) 2011Vinous (94+)
Roulot's 2011 Meursault Perrières is a wine of pure structure at this stage. Oyster shells, lime, slate and white flowers all take shape in a powerful, intense broad-shouldered wine. Today the 2011 is incredibly raw and unformed, but it should be absolutely majestic in a few years, once all the elements come together a little more fully in bottle. The finish alone is haunting in its beauty.$4,455.00 -
(1x75cl) 2012Vinous (93+)
Pale, bright lemon-yellow. Lemon candy and wet stone on the youthfully discreet nose. Then tactile, dusty and sharply delineated on the palate, and more dominated by minerality in the early going than the Charmes. Suave, juicy wine with a powerful impression of energy. The classy finish coats the palate, spreading out horizontally and building. Lovely wine, but give it at least five years to expand in the bottle.$1,770.00 -

Bright, bright yellow. Subtle aromas of orange oil, honey and vanillin oak. At once sweet, silky and energetic, with intense yellow fruit, saline and honey flavors supported by a strong mineral underpinning. Finishes with palate-saturating minerality and terrific length. Roulot told me that he used a new Damy barrel with a different toast and that it resulted in a rounder wine.$4,050.00 -

The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières looks set to rank as one of Jean-Marc Roulot's all-time greats, and while it is still youthful, its incredible potential is already clear to see. A classic bouquet of citrus zest, white flowers, chalky soil tones and blanched almond introduce a searingly intense wine that marries striking cut and vertical tension with wonderful glossy amplitude and dimension, its tongue-tingling minerality persisting through the long, penetrating finish. A benchmark example of Roulot's singular style.$8,260.00 -
(1x75cl) 2015Wine Advocate (95+)
The 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières is firmly shut down, offering up only a reticent bouquet of iodine, toasted nuts and citrus oil. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tangy and bright but decidedly taut, playing its cards very close to its vest. From barrel, this was the most intense and concentrated wine in Roulot's cellar, with immense potential, but given how closed the wine is today, there is really no point pulling corks for a good five years.$2,070.00 -

The 2014 Meursault Village is mainly fruit from Clos de la Baronne supplemented by three smaller parcels that represent around 20% of the final blend. It has a brisk, stony, slightly reserved bouquet with touches of Granny Smith, granite and limestone. The palate is fresh and lively on the entry with a keen thread of acidity, and a slight bitter edge that appears on the mid-palate but coalescing nicely towards the tender finish. You will find few Meursault Village as good as this (apart from down the road at Coche perhaps).$820.00 -

Gently sun-kissed scents of Asian pear, white flowers and honeycomb introduce the 2017 Meursault Village, a medium to full-bodied, satiny-textured and elegantly fleshy wine derived from the Clos de la Baronne, Crotot, Gruyaches and Sous la Velle; as that palette of lieux-dits implies, it's the most open-knit, gourmand and forward Meursault in the domaine's range.$404.00 -

As usual, 2019 Meursault Villages comes from several parcels including Clos de la Baronne, Sous la Velle and Crotot. It has a well-defined bouquet, a little spicier than previous vintages. Timid at first, but finds its voice with aeration. Hints of lemongrass and chai complement the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with good concentration and slightly waxy in texture. Fine depth with that spicy leitmotif return on the finish. Give this 18-24 months in bottle.$318.00 -

The 2020 Meursault Villages is bright, linear and sculpted. Jean-Marc Roulot did a terrific job in preserving freshness and verve in his village-level Meursault. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and crushed rocks are all laced together in this steely, nervy Meursault. The Villages is a blend of several parcels on the lower slopes of town; namely Clos de la Baronne, Gruyaches and Sous la Velle, plus a touch of young-vine fruit from Porusots Dessus. The 2021 Meursault Village has a lively, minerally, almost flinty bouquet that is beautifully focused. The 2009 Meursault Charmes comes across as big and quite rich. Layers of fruit totally cover the palate in this textured, seamless Charmes. There is plenty of underlying minerality but the fruit is so huge it virtually covers all of the structural elements. The wine remains graceful and round through to the finish. This may need a number of years to show at its best, but it is stunningly beautiful.$3,320.00 -

Pale, bright silver-yellow color. Sexy aromas of lemon candy and hazelnut complicated by charry, vanillin oak. Rich, silky and sweet, but with lovely harmonious acidity giving punch to the highly concentrated flavors of yellow peach and spices. Conveys a sappy impression of dry extract. Really builds and resounds on the aftertaste. The crop level here was just 24 hectoliters per hectare, according to assistant winemaker Eric Pignal. An outstanding vintage for this bottling.$672.00 -

(Roulot's vines are in Charmes-Dessous): Bright, light yellow. Aromas and flavors of peach, apple, pear and spices are enlivened by a rocky quality. A step up in intensity and verve from the Poruzots, showing lovely clarity of fruit and inner-mouth aromatic character but a bit tight in the early going. This has the concentration of low-yielding vines on rich soil but without any heaviness. Spreads out to saturate the palate on the back end, finishing with excellent grip and citrussy lift.$925.00 -

(one of three barrels was new; from a 1940s planting that yielded half of a normal crop in 2016): Bright medium yellow. Nose dominated by lemon zest and vanillin oak. Silky, concentrated and harmonious; in a rather rich, even creamy style but features lovely mid-palate floral lift. Sweet flavors of white peach and vanilla show no hard edges or austerity, but this wine's energy suggests that it will need more time in bottle to harmonize than the Clos des Bouchères. This very nicely balanced Charmes finishes with serious rising length.$715.00 -
