Currently headed by fifth-generation Claudio Fenocchio, Giacomo Fenocchio is an estate with a long history dating back to 1864. Never straying from the path of the traditional approach, Claudio continues to produce Nebbiolo using time-honoured techniques. His wines undergo long, slow fermentation before aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. Committed to following organic viticultural practices strictly, this estate's Barolo range displays dazzling levels of terroir clarity.
Giacomo Fenocchio rightfully sits amongst the top echelon of Barolo producers alongside Giacomo Conterno and Cavalotto. An artisanal winemaker crafting “classic Barolos that beautifully express their pedigree”, the veteran Italian wine author and critic, Kerin O’Keefe (Wine Enthusiast), named Giacomo Fenocchio one of his favourite Barolo estates. Somehow remaining incredibly affordable despite its very grand accolade, we are thrilled to present the latest vintage offering from this highly esteemed estate.

Good dark red. Distinctly darker on the nose than the Villero, offering scents of medicinal black fruits and licorice. Juicy, tightly wound and youthfully imploded, showing limited fruit and personality today. Much more tannic, too: does this have the mid-palate fruit to evolve gracefully? This may be in an awkward post-bottling stage today.$458.00 -

The 2016 Barolo Bussia is a wine of tremendous character and complexity. Menthol, lavender, black cherry, graphite, cloves and leather all open up in the glass. Virile and layered, with tons of depth, the 2016 Bussia has so much to offer. A few years in the cellar will help the tannins soften, but the 2016 is already quite expressive. It is also one of the very finest wines I have ever tasted from Fenocchio.$282.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Bussia is elegant, layered and mysterious, all of which make it incredibly appealing. Black cherry, spice, licorice, menthol, pine and espresso all open effortlessly in the glass. Deceptively light in its mid-weight structure, the 2017 delivers tons of flavor intensity and character. There is so much to like.$353.00 -

Moving to the 2021 Barolo Bussia, it pours a bright transparent red color and offers a pure aromatic profile with notes of cherry candies, preserved orange, amaro-like sweet herbs, and dried earth. The palate is also vibrant and transparent, with a bit more savory iron-richness lurking gently underneath on the finish, framing the otherwise more transparent ripe berried fruit that coaxes through the palate. It has ripe tannins and a bit more richness of texture on the finish that I anticipate will improve over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2026-2038.$399.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Cannubi is a very pretty, ethereal Barolo. Crushed flowers, sweet dried red berries, mint, chalk and white pepper are all nicely lifted. This is a decidedly light style, even for Cannubi.$353.00 -

The 2021 Barolo Cannubi pours a reflective ruby red hue and leads with a lovely floral and fruity perfume with an elegantly layered feel, revealing notes of fresh leather, raspberry liqueur, wild strawberries, fresh violets, and candied licorice. It moves seamlessly to the palate, with a juicy and approachable feel upfront before its more compact structure and energy reveal themselves through the mid-palate and finish. It has refreshing acidity, well-defined, ripe tannins, and a nice element of nervous energy through the finish, suggesting its ability to age and improve over the next 12-15 years. It’s a joyful and fantastic wine from Cannubi in this vintage.$605.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Castellero offers so many of the attributes that make the Fenocchio Barolos so appealing. Bold and savory, with terrific balance, the Castelletto expresses all of the energy that make wines from this Monforte site so intriguing. Sweet red cherry, white pepper, orange peel and sage are some of the many aromas and flavors that emerge over time.$313.00 -

Pouring a bright red color, the 2021 Barolo Castellero is fresh and lifted on the nose with pure notes of sweet cedar, raspberries, crushed flowers, and fresh tobacco. The palate is refreshing and approachable while also retaining a well-defined structure, with a medium-bodied frame. It has pure, ripe fruit notes, with well-defined tannins, even acidity, and an appealing spiced note on the finish. It will benefit from another 6-12 months to come together. (includes 20% rose; these are Fenocchio's oldest vines but his Villero bottling is not typically an outsized wine): Good full medium red. Aromas of candied raspberry, violet and flinty minerality. Juicy and tightly wound but with insidious sweetness to its youthful red fruit flavors. Wonderfully fine-grained, perfumed wine with firm but harmonious tannic spine and excellent energy.$447.00 -

The 2016 Barolo Villero is a powerful, clenched wine. Then again, that's Villero. Readers will have to be patient, that much is clear. White pepper, chalk, dried flowers, dried red cherry and mint open up over time, but the 2016 is sinewy and nervous in feel, with just enough fruit to keep things in balance. Hints of sage, tobacco, leather and menthol add the closing touches of complexity.$1,160.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Villero is another terrific wine in this range from Fenocchio. Dark and layered in the glass, with veins of the firm tannin that often defines Villero, the 2017 is wonderfully expressive. Sweet red cherry, iron, dried herbs and earthy tones all open in the glass. Readers will find a tightly wound, savory Barolo of real character. Give it a few years to unwind.$371.00 -
