Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon began in 1869 with vines in some of the best plots in Mersualt, Volnay and Le Montrachet. This family estate has been run by Dominique Lafon since 1985. He ended share cropping, key to their surging quality, with some of the best white and great red wine. Their cellars are the deepest in Burgundy.

Vinous (92-94)The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is a little richer and more opulent than the Clos des Chênes, ravishing dark black cherries, cassis and light violet scents burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, the oak a little more pronounced at the moment, therefore I would afford this bold Volnay 4-6 years in bottle if you can wait. Bottled under Diam 30. Closure: Diam 30 |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)The 2021 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has an attractive nose with pure red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit and an underlying mineralité. Hints of rose petal emerge with time. The palate offers tart cherry fruit mixed with orange zest, quite lively and focused. It is not a powerful Volnay and does not offer the sensuality of warmer vintages, but it is well balanced with a bright, edgy finish that will partner well at the dinner table. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. |

Vinous (93)The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru, which was bottled earlier than the Champans, has an intense nose of black cherries, blueberry, seaweed and iodine. The palate continues that theme: saline on the entry, dense and grippy, and very nicely focused with a lively, lightly spiced finish. Real succulence here, and very good persistence; the elegance is only apparent after the wine is slipping down the throat. |

Vinous (91)(the August hail resulted in a small crop of very ripe grapes, according to Dominique Lafon): Good medium red with the beginning of amber at the edge. Musky, fully ripe aromas and flavors of redcurrant, chocolate and earth, plus a whiff of cedar. (Lafon pointed out that he picked riper and did more extraction back in 2001 than he does today and one can sense that from the nose.) Fat, sweet wine with lovely depth and sound framing acidity; the fruit element is holding nicely. Finishes with fine-grained dusty tannins. Lafon told me that after the hail of 2001 he purchased a vibrating sorting table, and that ended up helping him eliminate the ladybugs in 2004. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2008 Volnay-Santenots is incomparably classy. Dark berries, spices and licorice are some of the nuances that emerge from this strikingly pure, beautiful wine. The Santenots possesses marvelous integrity and fabulous overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. |

Vinous (92)The 2011 Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has a very well defined bouquet with ebullient redcurrant and crushed strawberry scents, hints of blueberry following just behind. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannin. The oak feels a little strong on the second half, quite savory and meaty in style with a pinch of spice towards the finish. This might be moving into its secondary stage and can be drank now and over the next decade. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting. |

Vinous (93)Medium red. Wonderfully deep aromas of kirsch, blackberry, dark chocolate, licorice and minerals are lifted by a floral quality. Concentrated, saline and suave, delivering a terrific core of dark cherry, menthol and spices. A strong spine of refined tannins makes its presence felt late, allowing this lively wine to stretch out impressively on the spicy aftertaste. A classic vintage for this bottling. |

Wine Advocate (93+)Tasted blind, the 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu offers up a deep bouquet of red-black cherries, spices, potpourri, espresso roast and subtle grilled meat. Full-bodied, ample and sappy on the palate, it's rich but vibrant, with fine-grained structuring tannins that are beginning to assert themselves on the finish. Having drunk several bottles of this wine since release, the extent to which it's shutting down is clearly apparent, and at this stage, patience will be required. |

Vinous (94)The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle. |

Burghound (93)A markedly riper yet agreeably fresh and spicy nose somewhat grudgingly reveals its aromas of cool and pure black currant and dark cherry that are trimmed in pretty floral nuances. The middle weight flavors exhibit excellent energy and concentration while retaining a lovely sense of refinement on the powerful, focused and impressively long and slightly warm finish that is shaped by firm but fine tannins. This excellent effort should age gracefully for years. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94)A medium deep purple. There is a metallic reductive character to the nose, with some blackcurrant alongside the raspberry. When it cleans up this should be very good, which proves to be the case. There is a classy linear style to the fruit, and a suggestion of powerful longevity. I took a mark off at first for the reduction but as it has cleared I can restore it. Drink from 2023-2038. |

Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu is excellent, wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berries, plums and cassis mingled with hints of spices, grilled meats and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's deep and tightly wound, with powdery structuring tannins and lively acids. This is a serious Santenots that will require some bottle age, and it's among the best that I can remember tasting chez Lafon over the last decade. |

Decanter (94)The Santenots du Milieu from Lafon is marvelous wine and among my favourites among the Volnay premier crus, with its perfumed red and black fruit and pleasant floral notes. The texture on the palate is dynamic, with fresh acidity that carry the wine to a pleasantly lingering finish. There is enough extract and ripeness to the tannins to avoid any astringent notes. This wine represents the best of the 3.8 hectares of Santenots du Milieu in the heart of the appellation—a magnificent parcel that consistently produces one of the best red wines south of Corton. |

Vinous (94-96)For the first time, the Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu contains 50% whole clusters, which they believe adds more freshness to the wine. I think it gives another layer of complexity: black plum, violet, briar and just a touch of graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins and gentle grip, gaining body and depth towards a harmonious and minerally finish. Excellent. NB In 2023, they de-stemmed 100%, so the whole bunches are subject to the growing season. |
