Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon began in 1869 with vines in some of the best plots in Mersualt, Volnay and Le Montrachet. This family estate has been run by Dominique Lafon since 1985. He ended share cropping, key to their surging quality, with some of the best white and great red wine. Their cellars are the deepest in Burgundy.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)Lively aromas of apple, lemon, minerals and vanilla bean. Creamy sweet and wonderfully intense, with tangy freshness and complicating floral notes. Finishes with explosive fruit. From 75-year-old vines, to comprise roughly half the ultimate blend: Penetrating lemon oil and charred oak aromas. Extremely rich and powerful, with the wine's strong mineral character contributing to the impression of dryness. Really gripping, tactile finish. Large-scaled but uncommonly elegant Charmes. |

Vinous (93-95)(tasted from tank) Aromas of peach and vanilla. Rich, fat and classically dry, with compelling purity to the lemon, crushed stone and mineral flavors. Perfectly integrated acidity extends the palate-staining, layered finish. With a blend of 15-, 45- and 75-year-old vines in his 1.7-hectares holding in Charmes, Lafon has the flexibility each year to make one of Burgundy's top Meursault bottlings. |

Vinous (93-95)(tasted from barrel; the wine was scheduled to be racked the week after my visit) Restrained nose hints at candied citrus peel, flowers, vanilla and smoky lees. On the palate, lovely sweetness is perfectly buffered by ripe acidity, but this is very backward and minerally wine-more Perrieres-like than most other growers' Perrieres. Taut and uncompromising, and less showy than the Genevrieres. |

Vinous (93+)(bottled the day before my visit; aged in 40% new oak): Complex, vibrant aromas of peach, orange zest and lemon accented by white pepper. Rich, ripe, tactile and sweet, with the intense citrus and stone fruit flavors accented by peppery spices and complicated by vanilla and leesy nuances. A very good showing today, but this is still a baby. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (95)The 2015 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru is taut and linear, more reticent than the Clos de la Barre at the moment, yet it evolves in the glass and reveals a Perrières-like stoniness. The palate pivots around a silver bead of acidity with citrus peel and nectarine notes, demonstrating greater depth than its peers on the powerful finish. Superb! Tasted at the 05/15 Burgundy dinner in The Good Earth. |

Wine Advocate (95)The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is superb, unfurling in the glass with aromas of crisp peaches, apples, dried white flowers, honeycomb and oatmeal. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure, with a deep, concentrated and multidimensional core, vibrant acids and a long finish. There's plenty of tight-knit structure and dry extract here, so this should be a long-lived Charmes. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95)(5-Star Wine) An attractive faint green tint to the colour. The nose shows no signs of heat or heaviness. This is magical on the palate, absolutely fills the mouth, ripe lemons on top of rich pear fruit, but nothing peachy or over-ripe. A brilliant example of Charmes, as the vineyard and the vintage are completely in harmony. Drink from 2026-2035. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95)(5-Stars) An exuberant and heady style of Charmes. And why not, that is what we expect from this vineyard. Broad shouldered but it is a question of muscle, not fat. Harmonious fruit with a good base of acidity behind. An exceptionally convincing finish. Drink from 2026-2034. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93)The 2021 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru is strict with wet pavement and green apple/pear scents on the nose, though it does open with time in the glass. The palate is fresh on the entry, yet this is somehow conservative and does not really exploit the potential of this 1er Cru. Played it safe? Then again, there is a lovely creamy finish with a dash of spice that urges you back for more. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. |

Burgundy | 1 | 92+ (VN) | $481.00 | |||||
Vinous (92+)Perfumed aromas of hazelnut, lime and spice. Rich but racy and stylish; youthful and minerally. Rather elegantly styled wine, quite precise for the vintage. Very long on the finish. Lafon now uses just 50% new oak for his Genevrieres; as recently as 1992, this was made in all new barrels. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)The 2018 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru has a refined bouquet with scents of pressed yellow flowers infusing the citrus fruit, touches of ocean spray emerging and lending complexity with time. The palate is extremely well balanced. A quintessential Genevrières with a killer saline finish that is an absolute joy. Wonderful. |
