Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon began in 1869 with vines in some of the best plots in Mersualt, Volnay and Le Montrachet. This family estate has been run by Dominique Lafon since 1985. He ended share cropping, key to their surging quality, with some of the best white and great red wine. Their cellars are the deepest in Burgundy.

The 2020 Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette has a wonderful bouquet with fine delineation and touches of crushed rock filtering through the malic fruit. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Somehow playful, this is a joyful Mâconnais wine with a long saline finish. Closure: Diam.$98.00 -

Here the nose is dominated by smoky reduction and only hints of citrus rind are perceptible so give this some air first. The sleek, precise and intense middle weight flavors brim with minerality that adds a sense of lift to the highly refreshing, very dry and notably more complex finale. This is excellent for what it is and warmly recommended.$105.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (91)
The 2023 Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette has one of the best aromatics of the range: crushed stone, sea cave and light Granny Smith scents with good focus. The palate is well balanced with a crisp entry. This has fine weight and density but is more backward and perhaps befits a couple of years in bottle.$102.00 -

An even fresher nose freely offers up its array of green apple, plenty of citrus elements and a hint of mineral reduction. The racy, detailed and sleek medium weight flavors are wonderfully refreshing but not quite as complex on the stony, bone-dry and lightly austere finale. A year or two of cellaring should help to add depth.$97.00 -

(mostly from Prissé). This is the first wine to display even subtle wood influence on the smoky white orchard fruit and more discreet citrus-infused nose. There is more volume if perhaps slightly less delineation to the medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate balance on the clean, long and more complex finale. Fine quality here.$623.00 -

The 2016 Viré-Clessé wafts from the glass with notes of musky peach and dried white flowers, framed by sublet reduction. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, tense and racy, with good depth at the core and an attractive sense of completeness. It will need some time in the cellar to unwind after bottling, but it's an elegant, vibrant interpretation of the appellation that ranks as one of Lafon's best cuvées this year.$425.00 -
(12x75cl) 2022Burghound (90)
A more restrained nose is comprised by aromas of white peach, citrus confit and acacia blossom. There is excellent density to the succulent and saliva-inducing middle weight flavors that possess an appealing underlying tension while exhibiting a lovely salinity on the solidly persistent, youthfully austere and satisfying complex finish. This too offers fine quality.$616.00 -

The 2021 Mâcon-Bussières, a blend of different parcels, has a strict and more focused nose compared to the other cuvées. Airy with Granny Smiths and pear. The palate is well balanced with a tangy, marmalade and pear-tinged opening, spicy, almost Rhône-like towards the finish with plenty of extract. Very fine.$357.00
