Hudelot-Noëllat
About Domaine Hudelot-Noellat
The legendary Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is currently under the magnetic leadership of Charles Van Canneyt, grandson of founder Alain Hudëlot-Noellat.
One of the truly great names of Burgundy, Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat can trace its founding back to the (relatively) recent marriage of Alain Hudelot and Odile Noëllat in 1964. Combining not just their surnames, but their ancestral vineyard holdings also, one of the great producers of the vinous world was born quite romantically.
The Winemaker
Charles Van Canneyt is a dynamically young winemaker in the region, hailed as something of a prodigy ever since he took up the mantel of his family estate from his grandfather Alain. Having completed his formal training at Dijon University, Charles began to assist at Hudelot-Noëllat for a number of years alongside the watchful and diligent consultant Vincent Meunier, who very much remains the family’s lieutenant, before taking over in 2008.
The Vineyards
One would be hard-pressed to imagine a better Domaine to inherit. Naturally, names such as DRC and Rousseau may rightly come to mind, but Hudelot-Noëllat is every bit as desirable a birthright. A five-hectare parcel of some of the finest Grands Crus in Vosne-Romanée represents the pinnacle of Van Canneyt’s holdings – chief amongst which is his Richebourg and Romanée-St-Vivant.

Mid crimson. Open, fragrant and invitingly red-fruited. Lightish on the mid palate but balanced and juicy with appropriately subtle tannins.$428.00 -
Decanter (91)
Blended from a patchwork of 18 different plots, all opposite either Chambolle-Musigny or Gilly-lès-Cîteaux. This shows a bright red berry fruit character, with floral notes, light body and a silky texture. The fruit is destemmed and fermented on native yeasts, before ageing 16 months in used casks.$320.00 -

In bottle. A cherry to crimson colour. Fine, pleasing, stylish cherry fruit on the nose, cherry to raspberry on the palate, a little tannin to help the structure, but essentially on the fruit, pure and classy. Drink from 2025-2028.$281.00 -

Aromas of sweet berries and cherries introduce the 2023 Bourgogne Rouge, a medium-bodied, pure and supple wine that's bright and succulent. As ever, this is a clean, well-made, dependable Bourgogne that will drink well on release.$535.00 -

The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a very appealing, harmonious bouquet with ample red cherries, crushed strawberry and subtle undergrowth scents that gain vigor with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded, quite sensual entry: red fruit laced with white pepper, blood orange and subtle leafy notes. It gradually unfurls towards the finish maintaining adequate freshness and with a detailed bitter orange-tinged aftertaste. Excellent. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.$1,485.00 -

There is so much to like in the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes. Silky and layered, the 2012 graces the palate with expressive dark red fruit and tons of Chambolle sensuality, all in a hugely attractive, mid-weight style. Pliant and expressive through to the finish, the 2012 should offer a long drinking window of superb drinking.$1,375.00 -

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a pure, pretty bouquet of red cherries, crushed strawberry and orange blossom. The vibrant, fresh palate is elegant and airy, without massive structure or grip. The finish shows good delineation. I suspect this will be more for early drinking, but it is still utterly charming.$822.00 -
Vinous (87-89)
The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru comes across a little reduced on the nose at the moment. Touches of mulch filtering through the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, balanced, slightly bitter and like the Vougeot, just a bit "undernourished" on the finish.$1,165.00 -

The 2013 Chambolle-Musigny Village, which is matured in 20% new oak, has a very harmonious and quite intense bouquet with pure raspberry and wild strawberry scents unfurling. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin: crisp dark berry fruit with black plum and a dash of black spice on the finish. There is impressive length here for a village cru that is compact but focused.$661.00 -
(3x150cl) 2015Wine Advocate (90-92)
The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Village, from the usual 11 parcels, has a tightly controlled red cherry and crushed strawberry bouquet with veins of dried rose petal. The palate is crisp on the entry with grainy tannin, beautifully balanced with a poised, winsome finish and a saline aftertaste. It eschews the usual heaviness that can pervade Chambolle premier crus this vintage with a sense of precision. This comes recommended.$698.00 -

There is enough reduction to push the fruit to the background though it appears ripe. Otherwise there is a lovely vibrancy to the lacy and intense flavors that possess a polished mouthfeel thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a serious and mineral-driven finale. Lovely.$135.00 -

Deepish cherry red. Smells riper and richer than the Bourgogne and with intense and seductive red fruit, subtly floral and so open. Not especially long but delicious in its fragrant and open Chambolle character.$638.00 -

(from 11 different parcels in 7 different lieux-dits). A more elegant and slightly fresher nose is composed by aromas of black cherry, raspberry and pretty violet nuances. There is a really lovely texture to the delicious, saline-inflected and sneaky long finish that is very well-balanced. A quality Chambolle villages. (89-91)/2025+$165.00 -

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a vivid bouquet with red cherries, cranberry and violet scents, actually, quite Vosne-like in personality. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, quite poised and tense with a dash of spice on the finish. This is a delicious Chambolle that should give 12-15 years' drinking pleasure.$1,715.00 -

This exemplary village-level Chambolle has more stuffing than many, with ripe plummy fruit and notes of earth and mineral. The structure is firm and tannic and shows the vintage's freshness, drawing the wine to a stunning, elegant conclusion. The grapes come from 11 parcels totaling 0.85 hectares in a selection of lieux-dits scattered throughout the village, including Les Cras, Les Nazoires, Les Condemennes, and others. The grapes are mostly destemmed, slowly fermented on native yeasts over 18 days, and will be aged in mainly used barrels over two winters.$684.00 -

Lovely glowing purple, this is very sensual with an immediate red fruit charm. Very pretty yet with a fresh intensity, redcurrant and raspberry, above all a sense of purity and energy. This will make a beautiful Chambolle. Drink from 2028-2033.$615.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)
The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a refined bouquet with dark berry fruit, touches of wilted rose petals suffusing the raspberry and cranberry scents and neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a sorbet-fresh entry, orange rind interlacing the red fruit with an agile, poised finish. This should drink early—it's very fine.$615.00 -

Good medium red. Reduced, slightly decadent aromas of strawberry, spices, underbrush and game: this could only be Burgundy! Seriously silky, pliant and glyceral, with a lightly liqueur-like quality to the plush flavors of red fruits and spices. Quite sweet on entry, then more restrained on the back half. Finishes concentrated, spicy and long, with broad, suave tannins and terrific spicy persistence. A major mouthful in the context of the year.$1,490.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru felt rather stemmy on the nose, especially when compared to others in this flight, although it improves with aeration and gains cohesion. A hint of Earl Grey perhaps? The palate is medium-bodied with firm, almost rigid tannin. The acidity is well judged and lends this a sense of natural balance and poise, which particularly comes through on the tensile finish. This is a very fine Clos Vougeot made with a deft hand. Tasted September 2016.$286.00 -
Vinous (90-93)
Good deep red with ruby highlights. Restrained aromas of licorice, violet and minerals. Conveys a youthfully medicinal quality and an impression of power to its brooding black cherry, dark chocolate and menthol flavors but this grand cru is less filled in today than the Malconsorts. Finishes with substantial tannins and salinity. This will need extended cellaring.$341.00 -

Hudelot-Noëllat's 0.8ha of the Clos are made up of two parcels, both of them in the upper part of the grand cru. Intensely aromatic and sweet, this is the quintessence of Pinot Noir, with raspberry and wild strawberry fruit complemented by acidity and 40% new wood. Deliciously hedonistic.$1,050.00 -
Decanter (95)
Hudelot-Noëllat's 0.8ha holding is made up of two parcels, both of them in the best bit of the Grand Cru. Aged in 40% new wood, this is a not a blockbuster style by any means, emphasising freshness, balance and harmony instead. Floral, racy and supple, it has well-integrated 40% new wood, some vanilla spice and a poised, elegant finish.$744.00 -

(5 Star Wine) 8.5 barrels instead of 13. Dense, black purple here, nose suggests depth power and quality without detail. This is really fine on the palate with a starburst of energy, not too ripe at all with some raspberry essence taking the lead. Tannins and acidity in perfect balance, properly persistent. Very fine this year!$338.00 -
Vinous (94-96)
The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet, quite mineral-driven with crushed rock and pressed iris flower combined with dark cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, very focused with quite a strict and saline finish. There is a sense of class here and it has the substance to age well in bottle.$1,525.00 -
Burghound (89-92)
Moderate reduction is sufficient to dominate the nose today. Otherwise, there is almost painful intensity to the sleek medium-bodied flavors that also conclude in a slightly lean and decidedly austere finale. Here too the leanness is exacerbated by the high level of gas so I suspect that this too will better harmonize with time in bottle though with that said, I doubt that it will ever be seductive either$1,525.00 -

A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.$1,525.00 -

An intense purple, with fair nobility on the nose. Red and black fruits mixed, with a grand cru depth to the palate even if less seductive in youth than a Suchots or Malconsorts. However layers play out very well in the mouth with some little dark blueberries and bilberries right at the back. An excellent fruit acid balance without aggressive tannins. Drink from 2033-2040.
