The 2004 El Pison stands out from its peers. It has a deeper color than the 2007 with a splendid nose that jumps from the glass. Notes of espresso, balsamic, Asian spices, pain grille, mineral, and black cherry lead to a velvety, mouth-filling, deep wine that effortlessly combines elegance with power. It should easily drink well for another 30-40 years. It simply does not get any better.$3,675.00 -

The 2007 El Pison is medium purple in color with a superb, already complex nose of smoke, liquid mineral, crushed stone, lavender, balsamic, and black cherry. This leads to a beautifully proportioned, elegant, satin-textured wine with plush fruit, plenty of structure, and a lengthy, seamless finish. It can be approached now although it is still evolving and should drink well through 2027. Senor Lopez de Lacalle’s description of the 2007 is “delicate, pure, and a wine of finesse.”$2,865.00 -

The 2008 Vina el Pison comes from a single vineyard planted in 1945 on pure limestone. It is the epitome of elegance with a sensual bouquet, a silky texture, already complex flavors, and a lengthy, pure finish. It will offer at least a 20 year lifespan, just long enough for the 2009 to be hitting its stride.$786.00 -

The 2009 Vina El Pison is born from 67-year-old vines within a real clos rather than the fictitious ones that abound. I could be pedantic and separate it from Juan Carlos- wines under the Artadi umbrella, but like my predecessor, I will include it here. The 2009 has a fresh, floral, Margaux-like bouquet with fine delineation and intensity. The palate is full-bodied with an almost impenetrable carapace of licorice-tinged black fruits, minerals, citrus peel and a powerful, sensual finish. Perhaps impressive more than pleasurable (at the moment), this behemoth will need a decade in the cellar before it will shine. Drink 2022-2040.$1,440.00 -
(6x75cl) 2012Vinous (96)
Glass-staining ruby. Heady, exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe cherry and red berries, along with suggestions of incense, potpourri and woodsmoke. Deeply concentrated raspberry and cherry-cola flavors are complemented by floral pastille and spicecake nuances. Completely stains the palate and shows superb energy on a long, sappy finish that features velvety tannins and an echo of candied flowers.$1,265.00 -

The flagship single-vineyard 2018 Viña El Pisón has to be one of the finest vintages for this bottling. It's named after a plot of 2.4 hectares planted in 1945 in the village of Laguardia. The vineyard is an amphitheater with changing soils of limestone, clay and sandstone with a deep combination of limestone and silt. The grapes underwent a 24- to 48-hour cold soak and fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats for 10-12 days, during which time the grapes were foot trodden twice per day. It matured in French oak barrels for nine months. There's something mysterious about this Pisón; it's subtle and elegant, a little austere and reticent at first. The palate is seamless, silky with very refined tannins, with gobsmacking balance and a very long, clean and precise finish. This is superb. 6,600 bottles were filled in June 2020.$1,750.00 -

(1x150cl) 2022James Suckling (99)
Vina El Pison has been delivering persistent greatness over the past eight years, and the magic of this vintage rests with its complexity, which is all about purity of immaculate fruit. The wine is minerally and complete, with impeccable powdery tannins that seamlessly coat the palate. It is bright, vibrant, floral and almost fruity, but still a bit timid on the nose. The palate shows what it is capable of, with melted, dissolved tannins and a long, minerally finish without much adornment. From organically grown grapes. Tasted twice, including a blind tasting against El Carretil, San Lazaro and La Poza de Ballesteros. It still stood out. Drink or hold.$556.00 -

Finca de Los Locos is a single, 2.8-hectare parcel in Baños de Ebro, planted with Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 2% Viura. Paler in colour than some of the other Artuke wines, it has subtle, stony reduction, refreshing black cherry and raspberry fruit and nicely understated oak. Long and well balanced with almost no oak influence. 2024-32$154.00 -

Finca de los Locos - great name - is a 2.8-hectare vineyard that was planted close to the bodega in 1981 on chalk and gravel soils. A blend of Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 5% Viura, this is scented, focused and pithy, with aromas of thyme and lavender, pomegranate and redcurrant fruit and the sculpted tannins that are a feature of Arturo de Miguel's winemaking.$158.00 -

A vineyard doesn't have to be old to make great wines, as this 3.9-hectare parcel, planted at 720 metres in Samaniego as recently as 2013 demonstrates. Balanced, chalky, racy and refreshing, with chiselled acidity, understated oak influence, bramble, blackberry and cranberry fruit and a long, tapering finish. 2024-32$189.00 -

Paso Las Mañas comes from one of the highest vineyards in Samaniego, located on very poor soils at 720 metres. The vines are only eight years old, but there's no shortage of concentration or intensity here. Pine and rosemary aromas are a scented introduction to a palate of impressive precision and minerality, with subtle reduction and cranberry, plum and pomegranate fruit.$203.00 -

I like new wood less and less," says Arturo de Miguel, who uses none whatsoever on this cuvée of Tempranillo with 13% Graciano from the villages of Ábalos, Samaniego, San Vicente and Villabuena. Sappy, crunchy and refreshing, with lots of bramble and red cherry fruit and a hint of stony reduction. 2024-27$98.00 -
