Deep, chalky notes intermixed with black fruits, camphor, and an almost ethereal floral note make for a full-bodied wine that has slightly more austerity than Laforge or Teyssier (two other wines from the same team), but considerable style and nobility. Vinous - Ian D'Agata (88-91)
(85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc; 3.6 4pH, 4.05 total acidity, 13.4% alcohol): Dark ruby. Brooding nose opens with aeration to offer lovely perfumed blackberry, blueberry and flinty notes. Then tougher and more austere but pure and fresh in the mouth, with lively harmonious acidity lifting the dark berry flavors. Finishes clean and long, with repeating notes of blackberry and mint. The team waited until October 15 to pick the cabernet franc to ensure maximum ripeness. This is one of the rare vintages in which I prefer Le Carre to Les Asteries.$280.00 -

Just as it was en primeur, the 2019 Le Carré is a wild, virile wine. The Cabernet Franc is again incredibly assertive, with strong savory and feral notes that lend quite a bit of character. Scorched earth, tobacco,, iron and smoke are laced throughout a core of black fruit. Le Carré is not exactly subtle in 2019, but it sure had a lot to offer. It is one of the more imposing wines in Jonathan Maltus's range.$352.00 -

(from 80-year-old vines planted on thin clay soil over hard limestone): Full bright ruby. Medicinal black fruits and chocolate on the nose. Dense, plush and deep, with very ripe dark berry and chocolate flavors enlivened by chewy minerality. Can't quite match Le Carre for lift but this is every bit as concentrated and comes across as sweeter. Finishes with strong, building tannins and terrific length.$1,730.00 -

At once rich and linear, offering a wonderfully vibrant expression of raspberry, red cherry and graphite. The long, sweet finish shows a steely, peppery quality. This wine comes from 80-year-old vines situated on very thin clay over hard limestone, which survived the frost of 1956. I like this wine's purity and the fact that the cabernet franc, even though compromising only a small part of the blend, makes its presence felt.$1,870.00 -

The 2013 Les Astiéries is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Veins of chalk-infused minerality support an expressive core of dark raspberries, wild flowers, crushed rocks and mint. Tightly wound and vibrant to the core, the 2013 impresses for its pure tension and energy. This is a terrific showing by any measure. Les Astiéries emerges from a parcel on Saint Emilion's plateau. This is the most pulsating and energetic of Jonathan Maltus's 2013s. The blend is 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc.$399.00 -

The 2014 Les Astéries emerges from a parcel on chalk adjacent to Le Carré and is completely different in style. Beams of salinity and acidity give the wine much of its energy. Violets, lavender, smoke, tar, licorice and plums are all racy and exquisite in the glass. The 2014 is opulent yet retains gorgeous nuance for such a big wine. The blend is 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc.$429.00 -

The 2015 Les Astéries is a wine of pure and total allure. Much more satisfying from bottle than it was from barrel, the 2015 marries the natural intensity of the year and Jonathan Maltus's personal imprint with energy - a combination that dazzles from the very first taste. The dark cherry, espresso, mocha and licorice flavors bristle with power. Sumptuous in feel, but with good savory and mineral underpinnings from the Franc, the 2015 has much to offer. Coming from more hard-packed limestone and clay soils next to Château Fonroque and the standard blend of 80/20 Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the deep purple-hued 2017 Les Asteries is a step up from the other releases from Maltus and has rocking levels of blackcurrants, plums, chocolate, crushed rocks, and violets on the nose. This carries to a full-bodied, powerful wine that has beautiful concentration, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring and cruise for 15-20 years in cool cellars.$294.00 -

The flagship property of Jonathan Maltus (his residence as well), this is the best Teyssier I have ever tasted. A tribute to his efforts, this blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc over-achieves even in a great vintage like 2009. Opaque blue/purple, with notes of charcoal, blackberry, cassis and spring flowers as well as a hint of subtle background oak., the wine is opulent, sumptuously textured, dense, pure and multi-dimensional. It should drink well for at least a decade or more.$444.00 -
