Roche de Bellene
About Maison Roche de Bellene
Renowned winemaker Nicolas Potel (son of Pousse d'Or's Gerard Potel) heads up a number of successful winemaking ventures in the Cote d'Or including his own Domaine de Bellene, his negociant business Maison Roche de Bellene, and a more recent specially curated collection of finished wines, which are a part of his "Collection Bellenum." Potel has endeavoured to make the most of his finely honed tasting skills and wildly impressive list of contacts in the Cote d’Or with Collection Bellenum. Unlike the domaine wines of his Domaine de Bellene or his negociant wines, Maison Roche de Bellene, Collection Bellenum, is a carefully cultivated and constantly evolving range of wines which he has sourced straight from other producer’s cellars provenance.
A pioneer of a great many things in the region, his groundbreaking viticultural techniques to improve ripeness and concentration have been adopted across the whole of Burgundy. A significant proportion of the improved quality of wines and winemaking in the home of Pinot Noir is largely thanks to the Potel family.
An iconic personality of the Burgundian winemaking scene. He, alongside his late father, were really the pioneers of the great trend we are currently witnessing of winemaking dynasties moving away from cooperative-style producers to domaines (i.e. purchasing and cultivating their own holdings). Whilst naturally an extremely expensive shift to make, it without doubt allows for total control from vine to bottle and, in turn, superior quality wine.
A true master of that most prized aspect of Burgundian winemaking - an expression of individual terroir. Nicolas Potel was making 120 wines from 50 different appellations by the age of 33! Prodigious talent has now been mixed with vast experience, and year-after-year Maison Roche de Bellene makes some of the most coveted wines in Burgundy.

Cask sample. Intense, classy nose with real voluptuousness. Polished tannins are there in abundance with really bright fruit in great balance. This should beguile right through its (presumably long) life. Glossy fruit and fine, very ripe tannins. Good freshness and length.$2,465.00 -

Barrel sample. Deep crimson. Intense, dark fruit that puts the oak into the background. Terrific intensity on the palate, dark, savoury, charry but not at all over-oaked. Elegant tannins, extremely fine and deliciously dry. Immense length and refinement.$1,485.00 -

Cask sample. Deep crimson. Sample is showing very slight signs of tiredness which I will try to ignore. But the wine doesn’t seem to have quite the energy and conviction of the Richebourg. Maybe it’s a sample thing? But there’s just a slight rawness here as well as the density and energy.$1,377.00 -

Silky texture envelops the black cherry, floral and licorice flavors in this lush red. The base of dusty tannins is covered by flesh. Very harmonious, revealing plenty of power in reserve. Best from 2015 through 2035. 200 cases imported. -BS$184.00 -
Vinous (92-95)
Bright, full red. Sexy aromas of raspberry, mocha, smoke, minerals and Oriental spices. A step up in concentration and texture from the Petits Monts and Suchots, offering outstanding richness and sweetness to the flavors of raspberry and spices. Finishes very long, with suave, palate-coating tannins. A lovely 2012 in the making.$141.00 -
Burghound (91-94)
(Outstanding) Like the Amoureuses this is highly restrained and also requires considerable swirling to coax the otherwise superbly fresh and spicy aromas of various wild red berries, anise, sandalwood, clove and pekoe tea nuances. Out of all of the 1ers in the range this is easily the biggest and most muscular; indeed this possesses grand cru size and weight, all wrapped in an intensely mineral-driven and explosively long finish. Note that here too this is not going to make for a good early drinker as ample patience will be required.$230.00 -

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru is nicely focused on the elegant, pure nose, which features perfumed black cherries, raspberry and incense aromas - quintessential Vosne-Romanée aromatics. The palate is well balanced with a silky entry, fine weight in the mouth and a succulent, high-toned but not excessive finish. The opulence is pitched just right. Superb. This benefits from being located at high altitude in a warm growing season.$537.00
