The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts Doix is pretty, offering up an ethereal bouquet of red berries, orange zest, rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, pure and fleshy, it's suave and refined, with melting tannins and a saline, mineral finish.$1,175.00 -

Deep red-ruby. Explosive, rather wild aromas of raspberry, smoke and earth. Lush, sweet and thick; voluptuous for this cuvee but with terrific sap. Really resounds on the back end, which features broad tannins and an impressively rich flavor of crushed raspberry. A superb showing.$4,050.00 -

Amazingly fragrant, silky and refined, this exudes rose, herbs, wild strawberry, cherry and spice aromas and flavors. This is very harmonious now, and caresses the palate, ending in a wonderful aftertaste of sweet fruit, spice and mineral. Best from 2013 through 2023. 315 cases made. -BS$320.00 -

Good medium red. Dark cherry, raspberry, wild herbs and a hint of caraway seed on the enticing nose. Dense and juicy; less plump than the Haut-Droix but has plenty of stuffing. Rather massive, creamy wine but imploded today, even clenched. This, too, shows an element of edgy citrussy acidity on the back end, which gives lift and a light touch to the finish.$253.00 -

(50% vendange entier): Good deep red. Ripe aromas of small wild red fruits, mocha and brown spices, plus a note of menthol; deeper-pitched than the Haut-Doix. Then big, ripe and rich but fine-grained, with savory red fruit flavors complicated by spices and torrefaction. Finishes youthful, broad and long. Nicolas Groffier noted that his family used to vinify Sentiers for power, like our Amoureuses, but that he has cut back on extraction. Still, this is a strong wine in 2012.$2,750.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers has an upfront, fruit-driven bouquet with pure raspberry, wild strawberry and dried rose petal aromas that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, gentle at first but segueing into quite a structured and multi-layered finish with edgy redcurrant and crushed strawberry notes on the finish. This is excellent. Tasted September 2016.$2,495.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Groffier's 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Sentiers has an intense bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, quite spicy and slightly oriental in style. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, again, spicy and lively with a sappy, saline finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is a superb, if not particularly subtle, Chambolle-Musigny destined to give many years of drinking pleasure. Tasted September 2017.$1,395.00 -

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru comes from a parcel of 80-year-old vines, containing 25% whole bunch fruit and matured in 75% new oak. The bouquet is completely different from Les Hauts Doix, displaying more density, darker fruit, more substance and a less airy style, but still very pure and detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is plenty of lightly spiced black fruit, gentle grip, an appealing sense of symmetry and a longer tail on the finish than the Les Haut Doix. Matured in 25% new oak and 90% whole bunches, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru is the most opulent of Groffier’s 2019s with kirsch and orange zest infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a little oak to be subsumed on the entry. Good weight, quite muscular for a Chambolle with liberally sprinkled black pepper enhancing the finish. A little stocky, bottle age will smooth any jagged corners.$1,400.00 -

These vines sit in deeply clay soils, which graciously help shield the vines from heat spells. Nicolas Groffier used 100% whole bunches (the berries are so small he doesn't want to damage the fruit) but only 20% new oak. The result is a finely scented Chambolle with pure black cherries, blackberry coulis and licorice. The medium-bodied structure is focused rather primly between the resounding acidic refreshment and sculpted tannins. 2025-35$1,200.00 -

The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru comes from Cordon-Royat-trained 80-year-old vines that encountered a lot of frost. Raised in 40% new oak, this has a tightly-wound bouquet that unfurls with redcurrant, cranberry and light blood orange scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame the tensile red fruit; citrus fresh with a pleasant bitterness lending energy on the finish. Drink this fine Chambolle over the next 12-15 years.$1,535.00 -

Rich purple centre. A heightened bouquet compared to the Hauts Doix, with the little blood orange note from the iron oxide in the soil, and fresh acidity to finish. Less rounded, more precise. Fine tension here. One third new wood. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.$1,380.00 -

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees impresses for its striking inner perfume, beautifully delineated fruit and impeccable overall balance. The 2012 is subtle, energetic and very, very pretty. Expressive blue/black fruits, licorice and floral notes inform the feminine, gracious finish. There is a lot to like here.$2,010.00 -

(vinified with 70% whole clusters; 40% new oak; 37 hectoliters per hectare produced): Dark bright red. Pure, vibrant aromas of black cherry, licorice and game, lifted by a floral tonote. Sappy, saline and intense, showing early sex appeal and balance to its high-pitched yet fully ripe dark fruit and licorice flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and very good length. (Incidentally, Groffier's Bourgogne Pinot Noir, frequently an outperformer for its modest appellation, is a potential knockout in 2013. Aromas of ripe black raspberry, violet and game lead to a sweet, lush palate that shows serious muscle and cut to the spicy dark fruit flavors.)$1,480.00 -

Healthy dark red. Aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, licorice, rock and game are slightly wild in an enticing way. At once rich and juicy in the mouth, with firm acidity giving the black fruit flavors a penetrating quality for the vintage. Comes across as clearly more tannic than the 2016 version but with plenty of buffering material. This very concentrated village offering finishes with surprising length and firm mineral-driven acidity, and may be in the process of shutting down in bottle.$986.00 -

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées contains one-third whole bunch fruit and is matured in 25% new oak. Nicolas Groffier mentioned that it was hard to taste in November and it has since changed now in bottle. It has a light, pure, floral bouquet with discrete oyster shell scents that develop with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple, very detailed entry that really took me by surprise with its elegance. This is a beautifully crafted wine from Nicolas with a sophisticated finish that punches well above its weight. This comes highly recommended. Tasted at the Domaine.$468.00 -
