Ramey
About Ramey
A family-owned estate, Ramey is headed by the legendary David Ramey, a winemaker of serious pedigree. After sixteen years mastering his craft in Sonoma County at Matanzas Creek and Chalk Hill wineries, both of which he is largely responsible for establishing as the Californian forces we know today, David crossed the Mayacamas to spend six years in the Napa Valley. Quite the initial foray into the New World’s single most famous vinous appellation, Ramey was both winemakers for, and project manager of the new winery, at Dominus Estate owned by Christian Moueix of Pétrus.
“David Ramey is one of California’s best and most respected winemakers” - Stephen Brook (Decanter)
“In my mind, Ramey is one of the top wineries in the United States” - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
Viniculture
Decidedly Burgundian in their focus on individual terroir (and of course as single-vineyard expressions), his wines are true to time and place in such a way as only the very greatest winemakers can convey – luckily David Ramey is one of the best in the business. If buyers are curious as to what this noble white grape can really do in New World terroir, worked by New World hands and vinified by the best the New World has to offer, look no further...

(6x150cl) 2014Vinous (93)
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is just as appealing today as it was last year. Supple, open-knit and expressive, the 2014 will drink well with minimal cellaring. Floral and savory notes add an attractive upper register in this mid-weight, juicy 2014. Bright red stone fruit, plum and savory notes abound on the finish. This is a gorgeous Napa Valley Cabernet from David Ramey that shows just how appealing 2014 can be.$699.00 -

(6x75cl) 2015Vinous (93.5)
The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard is not quite as expressive as I thought it would be, given how some of the other wines show in this tasting. But it is also a more important wine and may simply be going through a stubborn phase. Red cherry, red plum, chocolate and licorice fill out the wine's layered frame nicely. I would give this mid-weight Cabernet another year or two in bottle.$986.00 -
(12x75cl) 2012Vinous (94+)
(14.5% alcohol; 30% new oak): Pale, bright yellow. Discreet scents of lemon, clove and minerals. Slightly richer in the mouth than the 2013 but also comes across as bone-dry, with the lemon curd and mineral flavors displaying lovely precision and subtle oakiness. An impeccably balanced Chardonnay but today the wine's fruit is quite restrained. This youthfully imploded Chardonnay will need a few more years in bottle to approach its peak and should also age very well.$1,190.00 -

From older plantings on a wide-spaced site—one the producer has worked with for some time—this wine is complicated and wild, combining rich, elegant flavors of salty sea breeze with ginger and lemon puree. Seamless and supple, it has a backbone of structure and lively acidity that pair effortlessly with the apple and pear.$160.00 -

The 2022 Chardonnay Russian River Valley is also a bright silver straw color and has a slightly deeper tone. Revealing notes of smoky wet stones, lemon balm, green apples, and fresh flowers, it has a bit more medium-bodied richness. with a lovely. light-on-its-feet feel in this vintage. It’s just a joy to drink now or over the next 10-12 years.$313.00 -

Bright straw-colored, the 2021 Chardonnay Woolsey Road Vineyard is forward on the nose with notes of melon rind, fresh pear, flint, and delicate baking spice, and it has a lot of vibrant nature. Medium to full-bodied, it offers fantastic tension and a linear feel with great length, and it’s going to age very well. Drink 2025-2040.$470.00 -
