Excellent deep red. Complex aromas of red- and blackcurrants, minerals and smoke, along with an herbal topnote; smells much sweeter from bottle than it did a year ago from barrel. Sweet, broad and deep; less complex today in the mouth than the Ruchottes, but offers terrific texture. The tannins hit the palate earlier than those of the Ruchottes, but there also very strong, persistent back-end fruit flavor.$1,015.00 -

Medium red. Very reticent, slightly reductive aromas of licorice and menthol. Silky on entry, then minerally and tight in the middle and youthfully austere. But this pure, intense wine finishes with superb lift and perfume and firm tannins that show no sign of hardness. This will need a good six or seven years of patience. I would not be at all surprised if the Mugnerets' compellingly pure 2001 grand crus merited higher scores with time in bottle.$864.00 -

Moderately saturated medium red with an amber edge. Mature scents of smoke, game, herbs and spices, plus a whiff of asparagus. Surprisingly sweet on entry, then nicely intense and mature in the middle palate, with game and clove flavors joined by black pepper and a hint of pyrazines. My enthusiasm was a bit dampened by a slight peppery edge that dries the dusty tannins and leaves behind a hint of tartness. Perhaps a bit more vegetal than fruity at this point but by no means bitterly green. Marie-Andrée described the 2004 vintage as a great challenge, although she maintained early on that any green character in the estate's wines in '04 were due to incomplete ripeness and not to the ladybug issue that plagued some red Burgundies that year. The 2009 boasts incredible depth and richness, with layers of dark red fruit that saturate the palate through to the finish. The 2009 is a super impressive showing from the Mugneret sisters. Good medium red with a healthy rim. Alluring, deeply pitched aromas of raspberry, mocha, dried flowers, spices and smoky oak. Then juicy, salty and penetrating, with the low yield of the vintage obvious in the wine's intensity. Firm acidity--probably higher than the last three wines, notes Marie-Andrée--energizes and sharpens the highly complex flavors of red and darker berries, licorice, spices, blood orange and black pepper. A wine with outstanding precision, this beauty boasts terrific inner-mouth floral lift and also spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate on the very long whiplash of a finish. Plenty of soil-driven minerality here and still distinctly firm-edged on the aftertaste. Marie-Christine noted that this wine was very closed when she pulled the cork an hour before our tasting. Fine-grained, floral and mineral-driven, conveying terrific cut to its strawberry, raspberry and blood orange fruit flavors. But owing to its strong saline minerality, this dense but juicy wine is about much more than primary fruit and is already long on personality. More savory and refined than the very young 2015 if not nearly as massive as that wine. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a lingering spice element. Still some new oak to be absorbed but this large-scaled Clos Vougeot has the stuffing to support it. Finishes ripely tannic and very long, with palate-saturating richness and captivating savory minerality. The first wine of my morning vertical tasting with the Mugneret sisters and a true breakfast of champions. Deep, bright red. Redcurrant, iron, tobacco and minerals on the nose. Offers a nicely restrained sweetness in the mouth, thanks to good firming acidity. But this very rich, spicy wine builds impressively toward the back. This began a bit soft, noted Marie-Christine, but now seems more solid. Good bright, deep red. Black cherry, mineral and tobacco aromas lifted by a floral element. Sweet, dense and suave, with a compelling sugar/acid balance and penetrating minerality. Comes across as much more aromatic in the mouth than the Ruchottes. Finishes classy and long, with very fine tannins. A superb early showing for this cuvee. Along with the Vosne villages and the Chaignots, the most expressive at this early stage.$977.00
