Marquis d'Angerville
The pioneering Marquis d’Angerville was at the forefront of the struggle to fight corruption and protect standards in the 1920s. He was one of the first to introduce estate bottling. Francois Divivier joined Guillaume d’Angerville; with smaller yields and older vines their Burgundy is silky, aromatic and long lived.

The pure, poised palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and flavors of black cherry and strawberry pastilles. Very smooth toward the finish, which feels caressing. This Clos des Angles will be approachable and difficult to resist in its youth. |

Vinous (93)Good medium red. Lovely perfume of raspberry and flowers complicated by subtle soil tones. Seamless, balanced and moderately rich, offering nuanced flavors of red fruits, flowers, earth, herbs and spices and no rough edges. This seems fully mature but has the spine and energy to last. Finishes with refined tannins, subtle sweetness and lovely slow-building savory length. Incidentally, the last time I tried this wine--in 2017 at the estate--it was silky and sweet but a bit more decadent and seemed to be evolving quickly. But, judging from the wine's low pH, this bottle may well be more representative. It was certainly firmer and more delineated. (13.15% alcohol; September 26 harvest; 35 h/h; 3.25 pH) |

Captivating aromas of black cherry, dark raspberry, minerals and flowers have shed the reductive character that made this wine difficult to taste shortly after the bottling. Juicy, penetrating and wonderfully elegant, delivering outstanding flavor intensity without any impression of heaviness. Red berry, red cherry and flowers dominate the middle palate, with an element of saline minerality expanding with air. Really stains the palate and titillates the salivary glands on the very long, rising finish. This wine is so well-balanced that it's delicious right now, but it has the solidity, sappiness and tannic structure for a slow and graceful evolution in the cellar. A transcendent premier cru. (14.1% alcohol; September 23 harvest; 3.5 pH; a major attack of oidium in Clos des Ducs in August resulted in a crop level of just 19 hectoliters per hectare, according to Angerville, who noted that the younger vines in the upper part of the vineyard were particularly affected) |

Initially it is showing some reduction on the nose, although it dissipates with aeration. It is certainly reticent at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. It provides that arching structure that defines this vineyard and gives it its longevity, yet paradoxically the mouth sensation is supple and smooth, with just a touch of spice tingling on the finish. Noble, and aristocratic - just how a Clos des Ducs ought to be. |
