Occupying 9.5 hectares across the Cote de Beaune vineyards of Chassagne, Puligny and St Aubin, Marc Morey has earned pride of place among our favourite producers in Burgundy. With their ardent practice of ‘lutte raisonnée’ viticulture they craft beautifully characterful wines with power and elegance. Earlier this year, Jancis Robinson highlighted “under-the-radar Burgundy domaines” in her article for the Financial times about rising prices in Burgundy. One of our top favourite producers, Marc Morey is named on this list among other renowned producers like Follin Arbelet, Gouges, Groffier, etc, which she points out as producers “whose current performance is greater than their price level.”

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)
Sappy, vibrant aromas of lime, honeysuckle, mint, truffle and minerals. Very intensely flavored, with the high-pitched citrus and mineral components and the wine's firm acidity (always higher than my other premier crus, notes Mollard) contributing to a very dry impression. Very youthful yet already offers lovely inner-mouth perfume. Like the Caillerets, this wears its oak gracefully. Finishes very subtle and long.$897.00 -

Slightly reduced nose offers cool aromas of lime, pear, wet stone and menthol. Supple and moderately intense, with a slight tartness to the lime and spice flavors but more texture than the Caillerets. Finishes reasonably persistent and quite dry. The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Virondot 1er Cru, which unlike the other Premier Crus was taken from barrel, has a lovely bouquet with hazelnut, orange rind, wet granite and just a touch of praline. The palate is very well balanced with an irresistible peachy entry that segues into a gorgeous quince-tinged finish. Often one of the Domaine best offerings, this Virondot is another to add in a succession of great wines from this climat.$520.00 -

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet En Virondot 1er Cru, which was severely affected by frost, has a pretty blackcurrant leaf and candy floss-tinged bouquet, well-defined and seductive even at this early stage. The palate is well balanced with sour lemon and lime on the entry, fine depth, quite spicy and lively with orange rind and quince; touches of peach appear toward the satisfying finish. What survived the onslaught of frost is worth seeking out.$638.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)
The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Virondot 1er Cru is habitually one of the Domaine's strongest cards, though this year, it is challenged by the brilliant Caillerets. Still, you cannot deny the nose has excellent mineralité and complexity, with touches of chai and chamomile complementing the yellow fruit. The palate is very well-balanced, with great power and precision. Wonderful acidity is interwoven into this Chassagne with great precision and persistence on the finish: elegance and class.$633.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)
The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Virondot 1er Cru is a worthy follow-up to the impressive 2022. Very complex and harmonious on the nose, it just could not be from anywhere but Chassagne, combining very subtle yellow fruit notes with stirring mineralité. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine bead of acidity. It's quite energetic at the moment, which will hopefully be captured in the bottle. There's a very sustained spicy aftertaste that completes a great Chassagne.$626.00 -

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru has a much more intense bouquet than the Vergers, with more mineralité and terroir expression; fleeting glimpses of walnut and hazelnut emerge with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine bead of acidity and notes of tangerine and orange zest. A judicious pinch of white pepper enlivens the finish. I appreciate the composure and persistence of this very promising Les Chenevottes.$91.00 -

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru sees around 20-25% new oak. The nose offers lemon verbena, pear and a touch of nectarine, unfolding in the glass with neatly integrated oak. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite linear and strict with a touch of stem ginger and towards the waxy finish. Pretty and appealing, though I think the ‘19 will have more longevity$611.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)
The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru, which was more or less ready to be bottled, has an attractive bouquet with lemon curd, crushed stone and light praline scents rendering very seductive aromatics. The 30% new oak is very well integrated. The palate is well-balanced with fine weight and tension. Quite edgy, veins of ginger come through on the finish, and there is a conspicuously persistent aftertaste. Very classy.$561.00 -
Wine Advocate (93)
One of the more youthfully accessible wines in the range is the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers, a pretty wine that opens in the glass with scents of honeyed pear, white flowers, orange oil and toasted nuts. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and charming, with fine depth at the core and racy balancing acids, it concludes with a long and nicely defined finish. This is well worth seeking out.$164.00 -

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru has a touch more terroir-expression and mineralité on the nose compared to the Les Chenevottes. The palate is taut and fresh with kernels of orange rind and sour lemon. Fine energy and good concentration on the finish, this is an excellent Chassagne that should age well in the cellar.$665.00 -

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru has a slightly more penetrating nose than the Vergers, more mineralité coming through with time. The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru was reductive on the nose when I tasted the barrel sample, but that will be addressed by bottling time. There appears to be very good intensity here, and with time, there is an unexpected touch of Shiso leaf. The palate is well-balanced and poised, gently building towards an intense finish, more so than the Chenevottes, with a lingering spiciness on the aftertaste. Superb.$613.00 -

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru, which is the final vintage as the contract has run its course with the owner, lacks a little tension and mineralité on the nose - a bit flat. The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is the first vintage after the 0.13ha of vines were replanted in 2019. It is aged in one 350-liter barrel (one-year-old). As the vines are so nascent, I was not anticipating complexity on the nose, and though crisp, it does lack some terroir expression. The palate is balanced with good depth, a fine spine of acidity, touches of peach on the mid-palate with a composed finish. A decent starter, though there is better to come.$597.00 -

The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc offers bright orchard fruit, particularly orange blossom, on the nose that will be difficult to resist in its youth. The palate is rounded with a smooth texture, lightly spiced with a dab of lemongrass perking up the finish. Delightful regional white Burgundy.$190.00 -

The 2019 Saint-Aubin Charmois 1er Cru has an expressive, quite floral bouquet, touches of white flower complementing the wet limestone and orange blossom aromas. The 20% new oak is nicely integrated. The palate is very well balanced with a keen thread of acidity. Poised and focused, this is an almost unassuming Saint-Aubin that belies the quality winemaking behind it.
