    Louis Jadot

    About Maison Louis Jadot

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.

Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!

A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions.

Vinified with one-third whole bunches, the 2023 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru (Domaine Gagey) bursts with notes of plums, red berries, orange zest, peonies and spices. Medium to full-bodied, suave and layered, it's supple, seamless and perfumed.

Medium red. Brooding aromas of dark fruits, mint and menthol. Rich and deep on the palate, with spicy red fruit flavors lifted by a note of orange peel. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and juicy persistence.

Medium red. Subdued but pure aromas of blueberry, dark cherry and spicy oak. Juicy, tight and intense, with red berry and chocolate flavors accented by pepper and herbs. Offers attractive flesh and sweetness, finishing with a slightly herbal aspect along with oak and menthol notes. This should evolve slowly.

Crushed strawberries and hints of raspberries as well as citrus on the nose follow through to a medium to full body, salty undertones and a stoney finish. Intense and very spicy. Drink in 2020 but already delicious.

Good medium red. More complex and vibrant on the nose than the village wines I tasted from the Côte de Nuits, offering musky scents of black raspberry, licorice, menthol and violet. Then surprisingly fine-grained and sweet in the middle palate if still a bit youthfully compressed, communicating an impression of medicinal reserve to its rich dark fruit, spice and violet flavors. Way longer than the village wines, with more refined tannins and subtle floral lift. This lively midweight is showing the dark fruit side of the vintage. I may be underrating it today.

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has a conspicuous fish scale scent on the nose that complements the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, sappy red fruit, lightly spiced with a sinewy finish that just about manages to retain an essence of finesse. This could evolve nicely in bottle.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru is clearly a step up on the nose compared to the Village Cru, with much more complexity and terroir expression. It displays a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and hints of clove. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and dark cherry fruit, mulberry and a dash of white pepper. It maybe just misses the complexity of the 2020 on the finish. It should give at least a decade of pleasure.

Cask sample. Pretty nose and a complete wine that is just the right side of ripeness (ie not too much). Lip-smacking and friendly. Actually, you could drink it any minute! Judging by the ex-cellars price quoted this could be GV.

The 2020 Beaune Cras 1er Cru includes 30% whole bunch as a trial for Jadot whose policy has always been to de-stem. To be honest, if I had this blind, I would not have said there is stems in this blend, which I see as a good thing. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh and I do think those stems lend more freshness on the finish. Excellent.

Cask sample. Pale garnet. Sweet nose and rather less freshness than the Boucherottes. Just a little less precise. But all may come right with bottle age.

    Vinous (92)

Jadot’s 2012 Beaune 1er Cru Celebration is aromatically quite expressive, with lovely bright, floral notes that play off a core of red berry and stone fruits. The gracious, almost feminine, bouquet is alluring and suggests a wine that is quite open, but the palate sensation is completely different. Tiny yields and high skin to juice ratios yielded red Burgundies with huge tannic clout that obscures the fruit, which is exactly how the wine comes across in tasting. It will be interesting to see if the 2012 softens over time, or if it gains volume with aging. Today, it is decidedly on the austere side of things.

    Wine Advocate (92+)

Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries and plums framed by a deft application of toasty new oak, the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Célébration (Maison Louis Jadot) is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit structured around rich tannins and succulent acids. It's a hearty, generous wine that should evolve nicely in the cellar. As usual, it's a blend of more than a dozen Beaune premiers crus.

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2020 Beaune Clos des Couchereaux 1er Cru has a sorbet-fresh bouquet, touches of blood orange suffusing the vivacious red fruit. The oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, gentle grip, slightly darker fruit than the Theurons with a dash of cracked black pepper on the finish. Good potential, but it will require 3-5 years in bottle.
