Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron
About Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron was founded in 1926 with the union of Jean Confuron of Vosne and Anne-Marie Bouchard of Premeaux. In 1980, the estate was split between the couple’s children, Christian and Jean-Jacques. Jean-Jacques had the good fortune of marrying Andrée Noëllat, one of the scions of the famed Noëllat family whose estate was subsequently acquired by Domaine Leroy, which explains why it is a common occurrence to find Confuron, Leroy, and Hudelot-Noëllat parcels side by side in several of the appellations. Today, the estate is led by Jean-Jacque’s daughter, Sophie Meunier-Confuron and her husband Alain Meunier.

Vinous (91)Medium red. Fresh, minerally aromas of blackberry, dark plum, licorice and bitter chocolate. At once creamy and gripping in the mouth, with a liqueur-like ripeness nicely buffered by mineral energy. Conveys a lighter touch than most of these 2009s. The long finish shows fine-grained tannins. Really spreads out on the end to saturate the palate. Alain Meunier picked early in 2009 but still finds most of these wines a bit heavy; he told me that he did not acidify. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)(tasted from tank): Good medium red. Cool perfume of blackberry and violet. Lush, sweet and charming, especially for Clos Vougeot, offering a rather soft texture to its dark fruit, floral and mineral flavors. This seamless wine builds nicely on the finish, which features fine-grained tannins and lingering sweetness of fruit. |

Wine Advocate (94-96)This is a stunning wine. This dark ruby colored beauty displays a beguiling nose of roses, violets, perfume, and candied red fruits that is followed by a super-ripe (sur-maturite!), unbelievably classy, and splendidly balanced character. Its mouth-coating, powerful (yet elegant), rich, and plump flavor profile is jam-packed with red and black fruits, flowers, and silky tannins that persist throughout its defined and amazingly long finish. This magnificent wine is a testimony to Meunier's dedication, work-ethic, and huge talent. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012+. Bravo! |

Burghound (95)This is also notably floral in character with a panoply of spice elements that add both depth and breadth to the cool cherry, raspberry and red currant aromas. As was the case with the Beaux Monts there is a spicy inner mouth perfume to the delicious and classy middle weight flavors that are shaped by sophisticated and very fine tannins, all wrapped in a mouth coating, focused and seriously persistent finish. A classic RSV. |

Burgundy | 1 | 95 (BH) | $5,495.00 | |||||
Burghound (95)A restrained but still wonderfully spicy nose consists of ripe aromas of poached plum, violet, lavender and black cherry liqueur. The middle weight flavors possess a highly refined mouthfeel with a silky mid-palate yet the hugely long and slightly warm finish is borderline chewy. There is no doubting the quality of the underlying material and the length here is genuinely superb but it would be fair to observe that this is a very robust RSV. Patience will be required. |

Vinous (96)The 2016 Romanée Saint Vivant Grand Cru has a beautifully defined bouquet. The fruit is darker than its peers: blackberry, boysenberry, hints of blueberry and crushed violet petals. This is quintessential Romanée-Saint-Vivant. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and perfectly judged acidity. This is endowed with disarming structure and poise, fanning out beautifully towards the finish. A fabulous wine but it deserves a decade in the cellar. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Decanter (96)Planted way back in 1926, this 0.5ha parcel is always the most complex wine at the domaine. Violet and aniseed scents segue into a palate that's smooth, glossy and textured with bramble and black cherry fruit, some chalky undertones, stylish oak and subtle reduction. Supple, refined winemaking with appealing underlying precision and freshness. One of the best examples of the Grand Cru in 2018. |
