Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier
About Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier
Frédéric Mugnier, a liquor producer in Dijon, founded the domaine which still bears his surname in 1863, starting with some of the best plots in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Badly hit by the economic crisis in the 1930s, Mugnier sold the liquor business and leased out the vineyards. As the domaine recovered, the estate regained full control of their vineyards after the leasing contracts ended. Coming full circle, Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is currently managed by Frédéric Mugnier, the fifth generation who takes the same name as the founding father of the estate.
The latest plot to return to the estate (in 2004) was Clos de la Maréchale. Spanning some 9 hectares, the Clos de la Maréchale is one of the largest monopoles in Côte d'Or, with an average vine age over 50 years old. With Frédéric Mugnier asserting full control since 2004, his first vintage to be scored was the 2005, which quickly won warm praise from William Kelley.

The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is endowed with an explosive bouquet and a multi-dimensional, textured core of dark fruit. The inner palate sweetness, richness and nuance here are all breathtaking. The finish seems to last into the next day. This is another spellbinding effort from Mugnier.$4,280.00 -

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureses is sweet, layered and totally beautiful. At the same time, it is pretty clear the wine has already begun to shut down. With time in the glass, some of the typical weightless energy of Amoureuses comes through, but despite its considerable appeal, the wine is showing only a fraction of its ultimate potential. I imagine the 2009 will enjoy a long drinking window once it awakens from its current slumber. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.$7,720.00 -

A little bit of reduction but great intensity. Almost rudely flamboyant. Full of fruit and allure although all on a very transparent scale. More intense than the Bonnes Mares. Racy and opulent within its own terms.$18,420.00 -

One of the clear highlights in the range, the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is simply dazzling in the way it captures both the essence of site and the pure richness of the vintage. Layers of perfumed, silky red-fleshed fruit built to a gracious, textured finish full of the resonance and pure depth that is so typical of the year. Mugnier served the Amoureuses last among his 2012s in this tasting at the domaine, and it showed beautifully, even after the Grand Crus.$2,320.00 -

Bright, dark red. Knockout nose combines raspberry, flowers and crushed stone. Utterly seamless on the palate, with its fruit sweetness perfectly countered by minerality. The wine's powerful stony underpinning gives it outstanding sappiness and inner-mouth tension. Offers a remarkable combination of thick, silky texture and energy. Finishes with thoroughly buffered, noble tannins and outstanding length. This should evolve slowly and gracefully for at least the next two decades.$2,800.00 -

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with peony and iris flower permeating the black cherry and blueberry fruit, all beautifully detailed and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very pure in style with wonderful focus and silky texture. Maybe the 2017 might possess a little more length, but this has wonderful breeding. The mouth tingles with glee after the wine has departed. Tasted at the Domaine.$3,305.00 -

A stunning bouquet of raspberries, rose petals, blood orange and sweet soil tones, deftly framed by a subtle touch of new oak, introduces Mugnier's 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses, a medium to full-bodied, supple and expansive wine framed by filigree tannins and racy acids, exemplifying the ideal of intensity without weight. Long and precise, this isn't as structured as the 2016 or 2015 renditions, and it will be open for business sooner. But the 2017 Amoureuses looses very little by comparison with those two brilliant wines.$13,800.00 -

Mugnier's 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is thrilling, soaring from the glass with scents of peonies, blood orange, rose petals, raspberries, bergamot and Indian spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's exquisitely refined, with melting tannins, vibrant fruit and a long, penetrating finish. Exemplifying the ideal of intensity without weight, this is worth every effort to seek out.$3,730.00 -

Captivating aromas of peonies, rose petals, blood orange, violets, raspberries and warm spices preface Mugnier's 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses, a medium to full-bodied, ample and exquisitely perfumed wine that's elegant and seamless, with a perfumed, sensual profile and a long, resonant finish.$2,675.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (95)
The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has an open nose with macerated red cherries, raspberry and rose petals, though it does not quite have the complexity and intensity of de Vogüé's Amoureuses. There is some reduction in situ, though it does not feel fixed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Smooth and silky in texture, touches of dried blood infuse the dark red fruit with a slightly savoury peppercorn-tinged finish. Plenty of character in this wine; it will benefit from two or three years more in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.$2,350.00 -

(from a .53 ha holding of old vines of an indeterminate age). An exuberantly floral-suffused nose is perfumed, airy and wonderfully spicy. The lacy, pure and focused middle weight flavors display an almost aggressive minerality on the youthfully austere and equally long finale that is shaped by notably fine-grained tannins. This beauty of an Amoureuses is already stunningly good with the development potential to match. Pure class.$1,980.00 -

The 2002 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has a light and leafy, almost herbaceous bouquet that in my opinion needs more fruit. Et voilà! When poured the same wine an hour later, it begins to manifest some lovely red cherry and cranberry notes. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, slightly savoury in style but without the depth that Frédéric Mugnier imparts into this cuvée these days. Nevertheless, the harmony and precision is beguiling. Do afford it an hour in a decanter. Tasted at Sarah Marsh MW’s 2002 Red Burgundy tasting.$6,365.00 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88-91)
Musky nose is dominated by pungent smoky minerality and crushed stone. Then fatter and chewier than the village wine, with more smoky oak and brown spices showing. Finishes with a note of tobacco. Seems less pristine and distinctive than the village wine, but there's more wine here. A sample from a second barrel was still quite bound-up, showing musky strawberry and mocha notes and a bit more clarity.$876.00 -

The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées is almost uncharacteristically deep, intense and voluptuous. Sweet red berries, flowers and hard candy all take shape in the glass. In 2011, the Fuées is racy and sensual to the core. All the elements are woven together in a fabric of unusual elegance and pure finesse.$765.00 -

Good full, dark red. Raspberry and stone on the nose, lifted by floral high tones. Denser and spicier than the village Chambolle, showing a bit more oak influence but not quite the pristine fruit quality of that wine. More saline and electric. Best today on the very long back end, which features firm, chewy tannins.$1,005.00 -

Medium red. Complex, slightly exotic aromas of raspberry, cherry, red licorice, minerals and smoky underbrush. Saline and classically dry on the palate, with nicely integrated acidity giving the wine a rather suave texture. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and lingering notes of earth and dried herbs.$1,120.00 -

Much more intense than the village wine. Lots of sweetness but with a medicinal note too. No reduction here. Very fine tannins. Great polish and depth. Like a very muscular ballet dancer.$1,760.00 -

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has a vivid bouquet of red cherries, cranberry and raspberry preserve enmeshed with crushed stone and light sous-bois scents, all very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, offering crisp red berry fruit laced with white pepper and clove. This is so harmonious – not the most powerful Fuées I have encountered, but sleek and sensual.$787.00 -
