Domaine Hubert Lamy
About Domaine Hubert Lamy
Lamy is a historic name in Burgundy, with a vine growing history in St-Aubin stretching as far back as 1640. However, it is Olivier Lamy, the current owner and winemaker of the family estate, who put this artisanal estate on the international fine wine stage.
A diligent vigneron representing the new generation of exciting winemakers, Olivier is keen to make progress in both his vineyard and cellar. Having sharpened his craft at Méo-Camuzet before taking over the family estate in 1996, he established a very sharp acumen for identifying the best and oldest sites. Adding his natural winemaking instinct to more technical knowledge such as how to train vines flexibly, his exquisitely fine and terroir-expressive wines are celebrated by Burgundian connoisseurs the world over.

The 2022 Saint-Aubin Clos de Meix 1er Cru comes from hard limestone soils. It has hints of lemon rind, wet stone and flint on the correct and quite penetrating nose. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine bead of acidity, but it eases off too soon on the finish, which feels conservative compared to others. Maybe it has a trick up its sleeve? It's a bit out-paced in the current line-up.$571.00 -

Lemon, lime and chalk on the nose, but showing a bit less energy than the regular cuvée and in need of some SO2. Then dense and juicy in the mouth, with the rocky mineral character buffering the wine's natural sweetness; this fruit was picked on August 25 with 14% alcohol, making it the ripest of these 2015s and also the lowest in acidity. Still, the wine's thick flavors of sweet peach and salty minerals deliver remarkable clarity and the finish displays explosive length. Makes a strong statement in favor of extended élevage.$4,265.00 -

A note of musky reduction to the aromas of white peach and quinine. Saline, energetic wine with terrific thrust and salty length. A superb mineral expression. This lot may yet go into the Lamy's classic cuvée of Derrière Chez Edouard. Lot #2, from a 2001 planting at a extreme density of 30,000 vines per hectare, which Lamy harvested first in 2016: Pale lemon-yellow. Metallic minerality and a note of minty freshness on the nose. Boasts superb sappy energy and intensity to its flavors of lemon zest, lime and stone, with captivating sweetness adding to its appeal. I would not call this an easy style but its vibrant, very long finish leaves the taste buds quivering. A great Saint-Aubin wine in the making.$5,250.00 -

Another tour de force from Lamy is the 2018 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Haut Densité, a magical wine that unwinds in the glass with notes of crisp Anjou pear, white flowers, citrus oil, warm bread and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and complete, this searingly intense and assertively mineral Saint-Aubin brought tears to my eyes. Sadly, obtaining even a bottle will require considerable guile and a large disposable income, but what pleasures await the lucky few who will taste this profound white Burgundy.$2,180.00 -

Whether the 2017 or the 2019 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Haute Densité is the finer wine will be a fascinating question to debate over the decades to come, but the latter continues to perform brilliantly, mingling aromas of green pineapple, pear and citrus oil with notions of freshly baked bread, toasted nuts and youthful reduction in a compelling bouquet. Full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, it's rich and layered, with a racy spine of acidity, chalky structure and a long, intensely mineral finish. This is a stunning white Burgundy that takes Saint-Aubin to places that no one would have imagined possible a mere decade ago. It's a monumental achievement from Olivier Lamy, one of contemporary Burgundy's greatest vignerons.$1,015.00 -

The 2020 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Haute Densité is another brilliant rendition of one of contemporary Burgundy's most fascinating wines. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of lime zest, white flowers, wet stones, oyster shell and subtle reduction, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a multidimensional core of fruit that's framed by racy acids and huge reserves of chalky dry extract. Incisive, penetrating and tightly wound, anyone lucky enough to acquire a bottle or two should plan on a minimum of a decade's patience.$2,095.00 -

Lamy produced seven barrels of the 2022 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Haute Densité from this parcel at the top of the slope, planted at densities of up to 30,000 vines per hectare. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, peach and sweet citrus oil mingled with notions of honeycomb, white flowers and toasty reduction, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, with huge reserves of concentration and structuring dry extract, bright animating acids and a long, electric finish. This is another masterpiece from Olivier Lamy.$1,555.00 -

The 2018 Saint-Aubin Derrières Chez Edouard 1er Cru Rouge was waiting to be racked when tasted from barrel. It has a perfumed, floral bouquet with pressed violets infusing the red and blueberry fruit. The palate is sweet and succulent on the entry. Fine, chalky tannins and compact sweet black cherry fruit define the structured finish. Very fine.$354.00 -

The 2019 Saint-Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard 1er Cru (Rouge) has a very focused bouquet of brambly red fruit, light loamy scents, damp autumn earth and powdered chalk, all delivered with fine delineation. The medium-bodied palate offers black currant and raspberry fruit, slightly chalky tannins and a bitter cherry finish that gets the saliva flowing.$434.00 -

The 2020 Saint-Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard 1er Cru (Rouge) comes from vines planted in 1959. The nose is clean and pure, mulberry and bilberry, not complex but focused. The palate is a bit chewy on the entry, a bit of sinew towards the backend at the expense of refinement. Square-jawed.$340.00 -

The 2010 St. Aubin En Remilly is another gorgeous, complete wine. It shows the brighter, more focused style of village. Citrus, white flowers and crushed rocks all take shape in the glass as this vibrant, chiseled Burgundy opens up in the glass. The finish is long, textured and absolutely impeccable.$2,840.00 -

(tasted from cuve): Bright yellow. Inviting aromas of elderflower, citrus fruits, smoke and minerals, plus a noble whiff of reduction. Large-scaled, rich and deep, showing good mineral support for the flavors of red grapefruit, peony and warm stones. This boasts the depth of fruit to enjoy young or to hold for seven or eight years. Extremely rich for Saint-Aubin.$169.00 -

The 2015 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly is excellent, offering up a pure and unadorned bouquet of crisp green apples, white flowers and crushed chalk that's classic Lamy. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, stony and saline, with bright, tangy acids and a pure, mineral finish. Right now, it's tight-knit and reserved, so several years' patience is advised.$2,770.00 -

Aromas of lemon, menthol, crushed rock and ginger, plus a suggestion of spicy oak. Very rich, pliant wine with compelling sweetness and terrific energy to its flavors of crystallized lemon and lime and minerals; there's also a pear note here that reminded me of Chassagne-Montrachet. Conveys a strong impression of sappy density without weight, with the smooth, slowly mounting, gripping finish coating the palate with crunchy fruit and saline crushed-stone minerality. This assemblage of multiple parcels should make an outstanding Saint-Aubin wine.$2,045.00 -

The 2017 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru has an airy, blackcurrant leaf nose, a touch of oyster shell and then more obvious gunflint aromas. The palate is tensile with just a bit of reduction. Yet, there is stupenduous length and grip. This is only just beginning to get going.$184.00 -

The 2020 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru comes from two parcels. This is perhaps the one cuvée that betrays a bit of exoticism on the nose: apricot and passion fruit, perhaps just eroding a bit of the terroir expression. The palate is well balanced with plenty of body, but for me this doesn't quite deliver the tension and nervosité as Lamy's other cuvées.$345.00
