The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has an almost flinty bouquet with delicate wilted rose petal scents that gradually unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, the 65% whole bunch barely detectable. Very cohesive, fine tannins, very saline towards the finish with shucked oyster shell, one of this limestone-rich vineyard’s signature notes. Sculpted with a fine chisel on the finish. Excellent.$7,135.00 -

The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has an open-knit bouquet with brambly red fruit, crushed stone and rose petals. Delicate at first, there is plenty of fruit and more terroir expression than the Les Cras from Ghislaine-Barthod. The palate is very well balanced and graceful with slightly chalky tannins. Impressive tension and mineralité in this Chambolle with insistent grip on the finish. This is finely crafted and should age with style. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.$780.00 -

(from a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 40+ years of age). A cool, elegant and airy nose reflects notes of both red and blue pinot fruit, exotic tea and plenty of floral whiffs, particularly violet and lavender. The sleek and sophisticated medium weight flavors exude an almost palpable minerality as the mouthfeel is akin to rolling tiny pebbles around the mouth, all wrapped into dusty, palate soaking and beautifully long finale. This is outstanding though a wine that will need at least some patience.$4,095.00 -

Good medium red. Dark raspberry, coffee and spicy oak on the nose; this wine's flamboyant ripeness almost came as a shock following the more reticent 2006s. Big, round, plush and ripe, with spicy dark raspberry and chocolate flavors and considerable density for village wine. Quite smooth and harmonious at the moment: Roumier volunteered that this is not as closed yet as he expected it would be.$640.00 -

As outlined in Nick's article on Costa Brava favourites, Villa Mas is the place to go if you want a wide range of Roumier wines at excellent prices – and many another fine Burgundy (and now Beaujolais) too. After a long discussion with Nuria the sommelier I chose the 2010. We were worried about the ripeness of the 2009. She is a massive fan of how the 2008 is tasting now and I should probably have followed her advice, but I have much more enthusiastic memories of the 2010s (especially Roumier's Cras), so went for 2010. We were not disappointed. This – ok, a lowly(!) village wine – was everything that red burgundy should be: subtle, profound, richly fruity but not remotely sweet and extremely long. The texture was a sort of glistening, tantalising taffeta – not soft. There is no hurry to drink this wine. If I had to specify a fruit it would be red cherries. But it was so much more complex than a single fruit, with some spicy notes too and wonderful vitality. Bravo, Christophe, and Carlos who assembled this great burgundy list.$4,445.00 -

Dark cherry, plum, menthol, cloves and licorice all meld together in the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny. This is a surprisingly dark, fleshy Chambolle by Roumier standards. The flavors are layered, deep and resonant throughout. A powerful village level Chambolle, the 2012 should offer a decade-plus of hugely rewarding drinking.$529.00 -

The 2014 Chambolle Musigny Villages has a refined bouquet with touches of hints of rose petal infusing the red berry fruit, fine minerality coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and nicely structured. This displays good backbone for a village cru with fine precision on the slightly curtailed finish. Very fine.$852.00 -

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Combottes contains around 40% whole bunch this year. It has a very refined bouquet with dark, almost broody black fruit, a touch of cold granite and graphite, austere and yet blessed with exquisite delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with sorbet-like freshness on the entry, here more blue fruit than the Clos de la Bussière with an elegant, poised finish. The word that sprung to mind? Balletic.$432.00 -

A lovely bouquet of cherries, rose petals, forest floor and subtle espresso roast introduce the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Combottes, a medium to full-bodied wine with an ample, more open-knit and more ethereal profile than the earthier, denser Clos de la Bussière that preceded. Sneaky persistence on the finish makes me suspect that this will continue to gain in depth as it completes its élevage.$866.00 -

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village is positively bulging with black and red fruit on the nose of dense blackberry and bilberry; a light marine influence surfaces with time. The palate is well balanced with firm, grippy tannins that feel more robust and slightly drier than the 2019 compared alongside. A little brusque on the finish at the moment; this will require time.$508.00 -

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village, which includes 35% whole bunch, has a very composed bouquet of disarmingly pure, predominantly black fruit laced with blood orange. Very succinct. The medium-bodied palate features crunchy black fruit with traces of licorice, gaining in density toward a finish that grips gently and evolves a Morey-like structure. Just a touch of heat on the aftertaste, but nothing to worry about.$695.00 -

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village is the combination of three cuvées wih 35% whole bunch. There was a slight reduction on the nose that maybe exposes the whole bunch a little more, but there is so much freshness and vitality still present. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, just a faint almost dark chocolate like note in the background that will be assimilated by the time of bottling. Fine length. Delicious.$609.00 -

Typically, there are five vats of village-level Chambolle; this year, there were only two. The colour is a lovely hue if a bit light. The light colour did nothing to impede the aromas, which are as pronounced and elegant as ever, with notes of ripe cherry and roses. The feel is light-bodied, yet the ripe fruit carries through; the supple structure supports it very well and draws it to a satisfying conclusion. The grapes are from four parcels spread around the village. They are given a cold maceration before fermenting with about 30% whole clusters.$388.00 -

(contains some premier cru juice from Fuées; from 8 different lieux-dits that include Les Athets, Les Barottes, Clos de l’Orme, Les Cras, Creux Baissants, Echézeaux, Les Mombies and Pas de Chat). A super-fresh and equally bright nose combines perfumed notes of plum, black cherry and subtle spice wisps. The rich, concentrated and seductive medium weight flavors exhibit unusually good power on the lingering, balanced and complex finale that is shaped by fine-grained tannins. This is an excellent Chambolle villages and worth your interest. Moreover, it’s sufficiently supple that it could be enjoyed young.$2,885.00 -

(this was racked out of barrel and into stainless steel before the harvest) Aromas of pineapple, minerals and oak. Juicy, pure and delineated, with lovely pineappley acidity giving this wine terrific cut. Shows the steely side of the vintage. This will be excellent.$1,270.00 -
Vinous (91+)
Very ripe, lightly resiny aromas of apple, hay, nuts, ginger, minerals and exotic flowers. Youthfully disjointed on the palate, combining penetrating liquid minerality and strong, almost citrussy acidity; I wanted a bit more balancing fruit. Very chewy, salty, concentrated wine with a finishing suggestion of crab apple that suggests late harvesting. With its pronounced acid element, this is tough going today.$1,340.00 -

An ultra-fresh nose reflects notes of green apple, citrus and plenty of floral wisps. The racy, intense and nicely voluminous flavors possess solid mid-palate density while displaying good minerality on the focused and lingering finish. This isn't a classic rendition but it's still lovely in its fashion.$1,245.00 -

The 2005 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de la Bussière 1er Cru from Domaine Georges Roumier proves that this vintage produced some really classy wines whose tannins are finally softening. It boasts exquisite purity on the nose, blossoming with white-tipped strawberry, raspberry, crushed rose petals and wet limestone, polished and sophisticated. The palate is framed by filigree tannins that, if tasted blind, divert you away from this typically structured vintage. There is gentle but insistent grip towards a finish that is imbued with the grip you expect from a Morey rather than a Chambolle. This is beginning to take flight.$9,775.00 -

Moderately saturated medium red. Brown spices and oak on the nose. Then pure, dense and complex on the palate, with spicy red fruit flavors and a rather silky texture for the vintage and for this bottling. Comes across as more vivid than the Combottes. This dense, sweet wine has the stuffing to buffer its tannins. Classy, vivid Morey-easier to taste today than the 2007 version. Excellent for this cuvee$2,900.00
