Emmanuel Rouget
Emmanuel Rouget is a nephew of Burgundy legend Henri Jayer, his mentorship passed on a infectious enthusiasm and deep knowledge of winemaking. He has stayed true to many of Henri’s preferences such as a focus of ultra low yields and maturing the major wines in 100% new oak barrels. His wines are much sought after.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)
Full red-ruby color. Cool, lively aromas of currant and tobacco. Lovely sweetness and volume in the mouth; suaver than the Beaumonts, with more flesh and perhaps lower acidity. Seamless and stylish, but with solid underlying backbone. Finishes with smooth tannins and excellent persistence. Showing well today.$19,295.00 -

Vinous (89-92)
(the yield here was just 24 hectoliters per hectare, according to Rouget) Good full red. Pure, tangy, cool aromas of raspberry, licorice and spice. Sweet, pure and lively in the mouth; shows more flesh and much better extraction than the foregoing samples. Finishes with sweet tannins and very good length.$16,170.00 -
Burghound (91-94)
A ripe, expressive and airy nose that combines both upper and mid-level register fruit notes that include red pinot, black berry and violet notes trimmed in moderate wood spice as well as natural spice notes of clove and anise that can also be found on the round, rich and beautifully balanced big-bodied flavors that are powerful, long and more stylish than usual. This is a terrific Ech that should be capable of at least a decade's worth of improvement.$12,720.00 -

A sweet, spicy profusion of cinnamon, ginger, cocoa powder, lily perfume, maraschino, and kirsch soars from the glass of Rouget 2006 Echezeaux, which comes to the palate with unexpected depth and richness of roasted meats, chalk, and saline savor, though to be sure, the bright red fruits and spices never flag. This is positively vibratory as well as riveting in its dynamic, oscillating finishing complexity. I'd give it 3-4 years head start and then plan to follow it for another decade.$20,980.00 -

Good full red. Deep, sappy aromas of kirsch, violet and minerals, with a medicinal cast. Sweet on entry, then taut and penetrating in the middle, with superb energy to the flavors of tangy, crunchy red fruits. At once dense and light on its feet, finishing with a saline nuance and lingering cherry flavor. This serious, structured wine really lifts the palate and stimulates the taste buds.$22,380.00 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89-92)
Medium red. Deeper-pitched on the nose than the Beaumonts, offering scents of redcurrant, tobacco, smoky minerals and sweet oak. Silky, round and seamless on the palate, with good minerality framing the redcurrant, spice and earth flavors. The subtle mounting finish features firm, slightly edgy tannins for this cuvee in the early going.$5,780.00 -
Wine Advocate (93-95)
The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured entirely in new oak, has a gorgeous black cherry, raspberry coulis and mineral-infused bouquet, coiled tightly at first but unfurling with each swirl of the glass. The palate is well structured, a Grand Cru with admirable backbone. There is patently impressive depth with multi-layered red and black fruit, edging towards something more rich and dense towards the persistent finish. Emmanuel Rouget was surprised when I opined a preference for his Cros Parantoux this year, so obviously he is a big fan. And yes, this is an excellent grand cru, yet it does not possess quite the same nervosité as the Parantoux.$6,715.00 -

The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru is very fine, offering up a dramatic nose of ripe red fruit, bonfire, espresso roast and sweet loamy soil. On the palate, the wine is rich and powerful, evidently structurally firmer and more masculine than the Beaumonts, although its tannins are similarly cloaked in a deep core of succulent fruit. There's also good freshness here despite the considerable power and amplitude.$1,550.00 -
(1x75cl) 2017Vinous (93-95)
The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured in 100% new oak, has a very perfumed and floral bouquet of shimmering black cherry and cassis fruit infused with iris and peony. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, beautifully pitched acidity and a silky-smooth, precise finish. One of the best Echézeaux that I have found in barrel this vintage.$1,365.00 -
Wine Advocate (93-96)
The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru offers up aromas of dark cherries, cassis, baking chocolate, grilled squab, burning embers and violets. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad and expansive, with a velvety and textural attack, a deep and layered core and a long, resonant finish. This is a rich and muscular Echézeaux that will reward keeping.$1,045.00 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2021 Echézeaux Grand Cru, aged in 100% new oak, is tasted from two barrels as one is heavily reduced, while the other shows fine delineation: crushed strawberry, wild mint and loam. The palate is heavily reduced at first, quite dense and broad-shouldered, black cherries mixed with cassis, a little chocolaty towards the finish.$5,720.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)
The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured entirely in new oak, was surprisingly closed on the nose, needing a bit of coaxing. It offers dark berry fruit, truffle and light violet scents, the latter becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit, blood orange, blueberry and crushed stone. It fans out towards the finish, perhaps the Beaumont with a bit more panache? Still, this is a lovely Echézeaux.$10,075.00 -

(malo just about done) Good bright red. Slightly reduced aromas of red fruits and smoked meat. Tight and a bit tart, with penetrating acidity giving the wine excellent cut but leaving it a bit dry on the back. I wanted more sweetness.$393.00 -
Wine Advocate (91-93)
The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Village is matured in 30% new oak, slightly higher than the Chorey or Savigny-lès-Beaune. It has a tightly wound bouquet with cranberry and wild strawberry fruit, fine mineralité percolating through with time in the glass, hints of wild hedgerow and cold stone tucked underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, brisk and breezing with a steely, focused finish that lingers long in the mouth. I appreciate the aloofness of this village cru, although I strongly suspect it will be less standoffish with three or four years in bottle.$396.00 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Village is matured in 30% new oak, although Emmanuel Rouget took this sample from a new barrel. It has a refined, pure nose, not powerful yet finely tuned, with subtle floral aromas. The well-balanced palate has a core of red fruit laced with blood orange and citrus peel notes that carry through to the lively, effervescent finish. I am deeply impressed by this Village Cru. Chapeau!$2,445.00 -
Burghound (89-91)
Outstanding. Touches of herbal tea and the sauvage add breadth to the earthier and slightly cooler aromas of mostly dark berries. There is very good underlying tension to the lightly stony flavors that culminate in a compact, rustic and mildly warm finale. This is quite powerful for a Nuits villages and a wine that will need at least 4 to 5 years before it can be approached with pleasure.$4,410.00 -

Vinous (89-91)
The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Village comes from Rouget’s four parcels in the north of the appellation. This has a pastille-like purity on the nose, dark cherries comingling with violet and light peony scents. The palate is well defined, quite structure, a little savory in style with black pepper on the structured finish. Afford this four or five years in bottle.$305.00
