The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Ballard Vineyard is fabulous. Rich and voluptuous in the glass, with striking presence, the 2019 is the sort of wine that will disappear at the dinner table in an instant. Silky tannins wrap around a core of dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and mocha, with bright Spring Mountain acids that extend the finish effortlessly. This sumptuous, open-knit Cabernet is a real head-turner.$3,730.00 -

The 2021 Chardonnay DuMOL Estate Vineyard is a powerful, phenolic, driving wine. Sage, crushed rocks, lemon peel, mint, white pepper and dried herbs infuse the Estate with tremendous complexity. High-density plantings of Mount Eden clone Chardonnay on this site yield a wine of tremendous distinctiveness and vibrancy.$649.00 -

From a site surrounded by dense forest on two sides, the 2022 Chardonnay DuMOL Estate Vineyard is a bright straw hue and has a more vibrant aromatic nose of fresh mint, bright lime, flint, crushed stones, and white peach. Medium to full-bodied, it boasts a remarkably firm structure with a bit of tannin, a chalky texture, and a savory slanting profile, and it’s long and persistent on the finish. It has an assertive but crystalline feel and a crunchy brightness. It demands a bit of time. Drink 2025-2035.$540.00 -

The 2016 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard has picked up lovely freshness over the last year and shows good focus, if less of the oiliness that is so typical of wine from this highly regarded Sonoma Coast site. There is plenty of character and verve, although the Isobel is decidedly understated and hushed next to the other Chardonnays in this range.$437.00 -

The 2021 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard is the 20th bottling of a Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay at DuMOL. It was harvested September 25-27, matured in larger barrels and finished with six months in stainless steel. "There are very few better vintages of this," winemaker Andy Smith exclaims during our tasting, and I have to agree. It's bursting with scents of matchstick, chamomile, Greek yogurt and white peach, and over time, it unfurls unique spicy, herbal undertones. The palate is intensely concentrated, boasting expansive, dynamic flavors that segue from stone fruit to honey. Satiny and seamless, it has a tremendously long finish with mind-altering depth of flavor. Fans of Burgundy will love it for its flinty tones, and fans of California for its concentration and power.$772.00 -

The 2021 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard needs quite a bit of coaxing to unlock notes of ripe yellow apples, grapefruit oil, orange peel, and juicy peaches, leading to wafts of wet slate, shaved ginger, and almond croissant. The medium-bodied palate has super-charged intensity, delivering layer upon layer of citrus, stone fruit, and mineral flavors with a silky texture and laser-precise acidity, finishing with incredible length and so many citrus and mineral sparks. This is phenomenal Chardonnay! These Hyde Vineyard vines were planted in 1986. "Hyde were the first to do custom growing and they do it so well," commented DuMOL's winemaker, Andy Smith. "The shoot growth in 2021 was very low and the yields were down from a typical 21 barrels to 17 barrels. But I believe this is the best quality is the best they've ever had from here." I agree. For number crunchers, the pH is 3.38, and ABV is 13.7%.$639.00 -

The upper third of the Hyde Vineyard goes into this bottling and the lower part goes into the HHS. The nose of the 2022 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is spectacular, with notes of honeycomb, fresh pear, white flowers, and honeyed lemon. The palate offers incredible texture and vibrant fresh acidity, with an elegant feel and a long, long finish. A mouthwatering white, it’s going to be worth laying down and checking in on in a few years. Drink 2026-2038. 22 barrels produced.$595.00 -

One of my favorites in the lineup was the 2016 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard, which comes from 23-year-old vines planted in one of the reference point vineyards in Carneros. Lemon, apricot, spice, flower oils, and tangerine skin are just some of the nuances here, and it builds with time in the glass. Deep, awesomely concentrated, and structured, yet still seamless and weightless, give it a year or two, count yourself lucky, and enjoy bottles over the coming 10-15 years.$434.00 -

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Meteor Vineyard captures all the pedigree of this well-known Coombsville site. Powerful and intensely savory, the 2019 offers up copious dark fruit, lavender, sage, grilled herbs and licorice. The tannins are both potent and present, yet they are beautifully balanced by the luxuriousness of the fruit. This is a superb showing from DuMOL.$655.00 -

The 2017 Pinot Noir DuMOL Estate Vineyard is more earthy and savory, with a concentrated, foursquare style that’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring. Notes of black cherries, bouquet garni, earth, and chocolate all define the bouquet, and it has building tannins, a great mid-palate, and impressive length.$702.00 -

There are 780 cases of the 2018 Pinot Noir DuMOL Estate Vineyard, another awesome bottle of Pinot Noir from Andy Smith. All destemmed and aged 15 months in 45% new French oak, its deeper ruby color is followed by a stunning nose of black raspberries, scorched earth, charcoal, forest floor, and candied orange zest. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully concentrated, it has some background oak to integrate, but offers perfect balance in its tannins and acidity, a great mid-palate, and a great finish. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following decade or more.$1,210.00 -

The 2021 Pinot Noir DuMOL Estate Vineyard soars out of the glass with breathtaking aromatics. Crushed flowers, mint, spice, blood orange and pomegranate are immediately captivating. The 2021 has it all—striking perfume, deep fruit and structure to burn. This is showing so well, even with its brooding personality very much on display. The Estate is a blend of Swan and Calera selections.$690.00 -

Medium to deep ruby-purple in color, the 2022 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard comes barreling out with bold notes of fresh blackberries and black cherries opening out to suggestions of anise, garrigue, and lilacs. The medium-bodied palate reveals impactful black berry flavors with wonderfully spicy accents supported by grainy tannins and great tension, finishing long with a minerally lift. This is an all Calera vineyard.$631.00 -

Sixty percent of the 2022 Pinot Noir Finn comes from the Bressay Vineyard with Calera selection and the rest from old vines on Occidental Road, with unknown plant material (planted with eight or so clones) that they pick all at one time, which adds a lot of complexity to this wine. It opens to complex and layered aromas of kirsch, fresh violets, sweet tobacco, and mossy earth, followed on the palate by a complete wine with velvety tannins and harmonious acidity, everything coming together seamlessly. A stunning wine, it’s one of the best wines of the vintage. It’s going to be hard to hold in the cellar, but it will be worth it. Drink 2024-2050.$788.00 -

The 2021 Chardonnay Highland Divide is gorgeous. Creamy and beautifully layered, the Highland Divide is especially notable in this vintage. Time in the glass brings out the wine's gorgeous textural richness and intensity. This is one of the stand outs in the range, especially for the money.$405.00 -

The 2019 Pinot Noir Wildrose Estate Vineyard is one of the most elegant wines in this lineup. Silky, aromatic and gracious, the Wildrose is super-expressive right out of the gate. Blood orange, pomegranate, raspberry and sweet floral notes fill out the layers effortlessly. Readers will find a Pinot with notable brightness and energy.$549.00 -

The 2017 Syrah Eddie's Patch possesses notable depth and textural intensity, but it is also raw and not fully put together. I won't be surprised if it is much more expressive in bottle.$481.00 -

A bright yellow color, the 2022 Chardonnay Wester Reach is a textbook example of this vintage, with a lot of elegance and a wide drinking window. From the Russian River Valley and aged in 25% new oak barrels for 11 months, it takes on more glycerol richness and a rounded profile. A great wine out of the gate, it captures the sunny feel of the region, but it’s light on its feet and closes with a great finish. This is a crowd-pleaser of a wine, and I would be happy to have this on my table at any stage. Drink 2024-2032.$350.00 -

The 2020 Pinot Noir Wester Reach has a rich perfume of black cherry cola, sassafras, and sweet violets. The palate is full and ripe, with black raspberry as well as ripe tannins and a note of black tea. Drink over the next 15 or more years.$324.00
