About Domenico Clerico
Clerico rose to become a "giant of Barolo" (Decanter), having started to produce wine in 1979 after taking over his father’s vineyard three years earlier and today this small but historic estate is now managed by winemaker and General Director Oscar Arrivabene. The winery is now one of the most respected names in all Barolo not only for their extremely high-quality wines but also for showcasing exceptional expression of the terroirs of their outstanding vineyard holdings in four of the greatest Crus of Monforte; Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana and Mosconi.

But for now, we have the 2015 Barolo. The classic 2016 Barolo by Domenico Clerico is a generous and full wine that offers a panoramic view of the Nebbiolo grape all in bright Technicolor and with the appropriate intensity. The wine's all-encompassing approach brings many details into focus, including wild cherry, spice, leather and ferrous soil. Fruit is exclusively from Monforte d'Alba, with some from the lower parts of Pajana and Per Cristina and some from the younger vines planted in Ciabot Mentin. This is an elegant expression with the mild oak signature that is an important part of the Clerico playlist. Camphor ash and burnt embers lift lightly as the wine opens in the glass. At this young stage, the wine is slightly austere and rigid, especially in terms of mouthfeel. This is completely expected, especially in a cool vintage such as 2013. Aeroplanservaj is a kind of futurist label to indicate the first Barolo produced in Serralunga from Domenico Clerico. Oscar Arrivabene, winemaker of the estate, explained that 10% of oak for ageing is barrique; more a logistical rather than stylistic decision since the property in Serralunga is so small. There's a hint of smoky woodland in the wine, with dried cherry, cinnamon spice and an intoxicating sweet violet character soaking the structure. The attack is stern, not rustic but just fiercely youthful. The tannins at the moment need taming, but it's a Serralunga full of details and I would bet on it ageing well.$118.00 -

The 2007 Barolo Ciabot Mentin is one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted at this address. Deep, sensual layers of fruit flow from the glass as this full-throttle, intense Barolo reveals its profound, breathtaking personality. The 2007 shows tons of Ginestra nuance, but with extra dimensions to the fruit that literally covers every nook and cranny of the palate. Tasting this next to the 2006 is quite a comparison, as both wines are fabulous. Readers who can should be sure to own bottles of both. A side-by-side comparison is sure to be fascinating as the wines develop over the coming years. Astute readers will note the slight name change here, which is the result of new regulations that require the use of the historic vineyard name, in this case Ginestra, or a proprietary name. Call me nostalgic, but it is sad to see one of the iconic labels in Barolo disappear. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.$628.00 -

Deeper and richer on the nose than the Pajana, with scents of redcurrant, mocha, dried flowers and earth. Wonderfully deep, layered and sweet; lush but with good limestone lift. Less obvious and definitely more flirtatious, this gorgeous wine playfully dangles subtle hints of licorice, dark fruit, anisette and Middle Eastern spice in front of your nose.
