    Fourrier

This small Burgundy Domaine has been producing some very well-regarded wines from its base in Gevrey-Chambertin. Producing wines in the region over four generations, there are few producers with as much regional expertise. The current vigneron, Jean-Marie Fourrier took over in 1994 after completing an internship with Henri Jayer, arguably the most legendary winemaker in modern Burgundy. There are hints of Jayer in the style and the wines are truly delicious.

    Burghound (89-91)

Outstanding. An ultra-fresh and cool nose freely offers up its combination of both red and dark wild berries, plum and plenty of underbrush wisps. The delicious and vibrant middleweight flavors possess a lovely texture that carries over to the balanced, youthfully austere and moderately firm finale. While this could benefit from having more depth, that should reasonably come in time.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)

Bright crimson, fresh red fruit with precision, and length, over and above the Bourgogne. Really smart harmonious wine with good length, the little red fruits staying in the mouth. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.

The 2011 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru is blessed with a sublime bouquet of intense red currant, fresh strawberry and rose petal aromas that display exquisite delineation and positively blossoms in the glass. The palate has a satin-like entry underpinned by filigree tannins that render this Griotte feminine, elegant and graceful with fabulous focus. This is simply exquisite. Drink 2014-2030.

The 2014 Griottes Chambertin Grand Cru has a very intense bouquet with maraschino, blueberry and violets blossoming in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black fruit, blueberry and a hint of balsamic, leading to a quite a structured and dense finish that just needs a touch more finesse. I think that will develop with time. Superb.

    Vinous (95-97)

The 2020 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a vivacious bouquet with fine delineation, fragrant rose petal and peony scents infuse the mixture of red and black fruit that intensify with aeration, almost sorbet like with touches of squeezed orange zest. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit. Fine detail and poise in situ, very focused and surfeit with livewire energy, this is destined to be a superb Griotte-Chambertin for long-term ageing. Four barrels produced.

The 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru bursts with scents of cassis, wild plums, rich spices, forest floor and black truffle. On the palate, it's full-bodied, chewy and concentrated, standing out as one of the deeper, more powerful wines in the range and concluding with a long and expansive finish. While it isn't as refined as Fourrier's domaine bottlings, if this rounds out with further élevage and bottle age, it's a decidedly promising Mazis in the making.

Good bright red. Spicy blackberry, mocha, pungent spices and exotic herbs on the very ripe nose. Sweet, lush and broad, but with a less refined texture than the Gruenchers. Finishes with substantial tannins.

Good medium red. Aromas of black cherry, mocha, minerals and licorice. Dense, supple and smooth, with savory notes of pepper and smoke. Nicely tactile finish displays suave tannins and saline soil tones. I underestimated this wine from barrel last year.

Fourrier’s 2011 Morey-St. Denis Clos Solon wafts from the glass with sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, savory herbs and mint. A delicate, fragrant wine, the 2011 looks to be a delicious, tasty Burgundy to drink pretty much upon release and for at least a few years thereafter.

Bright dark red. Very fresh aromas of blueberry and menthol plus a hint of game. Concentrated and seamless, with its crushed purple fruit flavors complicated by a suggestion of fresh blood. Offers a lovely combination of thickness and acidity and finishes with a firm tannic spine. This cool site did very well in 2015.

    Vinous (87-89)

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Solon has a very perfumed bouquet of dark plum and raspberry scents; a little iodine emerges with time. The deep, broody palate is well-structured with grainy tannins and a structured, slightly tarry finish. Fine, but needs a little more joy.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)

Fine purple, the nose flirts with breadstick volatile, unless that is the effect of the re addition of the stems. Pure red fruit, some plumpness, nothing overripe, just the light volatility. Fresh juicy finish. Tasted: December 2021

    Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Solon has long been one of Jean-Marie Fourrier's strongest cards, and this vintage is no different: the wonderful, quite complex nose offers blackberry, raspberry, sous-bois, and light tobacco scents. Very engaging. The medium-bodied palate is excellent, balanced with fine tannins and a sense of elegance towards the finish, demonstrating very assiduous winemaking. Excellent.

    Decanter (94)

Fourrier’s Morey Clos Solon features very exuberant aromas of ripe plum with a lavender edge and a bit of spice. The texture is silky and fresh, but there is more substance and weight than the same wine in 2022. The grapes are from a half hectare along the main road into Morey below the band of premier crus. As is his custom, Jean-Marie has destemmed but added some of the stems back into the ferment to produce this delicious wine. Cellar this wine for three to five years to allow it time to open.
