    Fourrier

This small Burgundy Domaine has been producing some very well-regarded wines from its base in Gevrey-Chambertin. Producing wines in the region over four generations, there are few producers with as much regional expertise. The current vigneron, Jean-Marie Fourrier took over in 1994 after completing an internship with Henri Jayer, arguably the most legendary winemaker in modern Burgundy. There are hints of Jayer in the style and the wines are truly delicious.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

A bright crimson colour. The nose has a bright rugged raspberry and strawberry with no evident oak, though this appears at the back of the palate. A useful little touch of acidity with the final dark berry fruit. This builds beautifully at the finish and is harmonious all the way through. Drink from 2030-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

    Vinous (91-94)

Dark red with ruby highlights. Aromas of blueberry, raspberry, leather and game, lifted by a crushed stone element. In a supple, ripe style, but with terrific sappy intensity and lift to the crushed raspberry and mineral flavors. The tannins are fine-grained and sweet. A stunning example of this calcaire-rich premier cru.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Goulots 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with scents of kirsch, Morello cherries, orange blossom and light cassis aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, quite firm in terms of grip with a little rigidity on the finish that should mellow by the time this is bottled. I like the energy here, but it will probably require four or five years in bottle.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Goulots 1er Cru has a very ripe bouquet that flirts with sur-maturité; hints of dates and fig can be glimpsed among the blue and red fruit. I would like to see more composure here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe, a little heady in style but retaining decent balance and freshness toward the finish. Not bad, although I have tasted better vintages in the past.

    Vinous (91)

Moderately saturated medium red. Complex nose melds strawberry, flowers, game and mocha. Deeper than the Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Solon; brisk, salty and concentrated, offering considerable personality and sex appeal. This very sappy village wine shows excellent clarity and length, finishing with harmonious tannins.

An attractive bouquet of plums, cassis and earthy forest floor introduces the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny wine, with melting tannins, tangy acids and good concentration, concluding with a long finish. Elegant and pure, it exemplifies Fourrier's style.

    Burghound (90-92)

(from six different lieux-dits). This too is notably ripe but fresh with a brooding nose of various wild dark berries, warm earth and pretty floral nuances. There is again excellent energy and tension to the intense, precise and muscular flavors that display outstanding complexity and sneaky good length. This offers unusually good quality for a Gevrey villages plus it is a wine that should amply repay up to a decade of cellaring. (90-92)/2027+
