Fourrier
This small Burgundy Domaine has been producing some very well-regarded wines from its base in Gevrey-Chambertin. Producing wines in the region over four generations, there are few producers with as much regional expertise. The current vigneron, Jean-Marie Fourrier took over in 1994 after completing an internship with Henri Jayer, arguably the most legendary winemaker in modern Burgundy. There are hints of Jayer in the style and the wines are truly delicious.

Fourrier’s Morey Clos Solon features very exuberant aromas of ripe plum with a lavender edge and a bit of spice. The texture is silky and fresh, but there is more substance and weight than the same wine in 2022. The grapes are from a half hectare along the main road into Morey below the band of premier crus. As is his custom, Jean-Marie has destemmed but added some of the stems back into the ferment to produce this delicious wine. Cellar this wine for three to five years to allow it time to open.$775.00 -

Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Rather wild scents of crushed cherry stomp, flowers, medicinal herbs and minerals. Offers a lovely fine-grained texture and sweetness of fruit but still in a juicy style for all its ripeness. Very good for this cuvée but there are just three barrels of this juice from 0.34 hectare--or not much above 20 hectoliters per hectare. Savory and long on the aftertaste, with plenty of tannic support.$1,315.00 -

The 2018 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeot 1er Cru has a pretty, potpourri-tinged red and black cherry bouquet that is very Vosne-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, plenty of raspberry confit and crushed strawberry fruit laced with dark chocolate toward the grippy finish. The palate already conveys a sense of energy, sorbet-fresh red fruit laced with dessicated orange peel, touches of stem ginger emerging towards the spicy finish. Very impressive length. Bright, dark red with ruby highlights. Soil-driven aromas of dark raspberry, licorice and black and white pepper. Boasts lovely saline minerality and spicy depth to its sappy core of raspberry and black cherry fruit. Conveys a strong impression of density and energy and finishes with terrific dusty, tactile length. The yield here was about 32 hectoliters per hectare. Bright, deep red. Reticent but highly complex scents of raspberry, rose petal, white pepper, red licorice and mint. At once silky and sharply delineated, conveying outstanding intensity without any undue weight. Utterly seamless Chambertin if a bit youthfully linear today. The very long, rising finish is lightly saline and classically dry. Fourrier told me he has no plans to produce more than 30% as much négociant wine as domain wine in future years.$3,005.00 -

Transparent and challenging but very long and persistent and deserves lots of time – yet you could enjoy it today. Really vibrates on the palate. Very lifted – deliberately so. The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has a charming, quite regal bouquet with layers of crushed strawberry, raspberry and crushed iris aromas that blossom with aeration. The palate is very refined, beautifully focused with a silver bead of acidity. There is a sorbet-like freshness from start to finish, a gentle crescendo of flavours towards the blackberry, raspberry and orange zest finish that lingers persistently in the mouth. This is a blend of Chambertin itself (two-thirds) and one third Clos de Bèze. Glowing imperial crimson purple. The nose has it all, clearly all the nobility it should have. The crunchy mineral tension found throughout the Fourrier wines pays dividends here. There is exceptional intensity but it is beautifully judged. Some liquorice notes but above all an amazing intensity of fruit which lingers long.$3,880.00 -

Medium red. Alluring floral lift to the aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, crushed stone and sexy oak. Dense, broad and energetic, with a captivating subtle sweetness to the red berry and mineral flavors. Really saturates the palate and builds on the back end, finishing with noble, fine-grained tannins. Fourrier uses the same percentage of new oak to age his négociant and domain wines--around 20%.$1,420.00
