    Domaine de Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier is distinctive as one of the few Graves estates that make powerful yet graceful white and red wine. They have been creating one of the best dry whites in Bordeaux for a number of years but their red is just returning to its former glory, reaping the rewards of a bold replanting in the 1980s.

This is dense and very structured with phenolic tension and depth. Full-bodied, lightly phenolic with sliced apples, cooked pears and lemons. Lively and intense. Solid as a rock. This is one to watch.

I loved the 2019 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc, which has the crisp, racy, yet concentrated style of the estate that few others can achieve. Gorgeous white peach, mandarin orange, honeyed minerality, and a kiss of toast all define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, integrated acidity, plenty of concentration, and a great finish that picks up some obvious minerality. This stunning juice needs 3-4 years of bottle age and will evolve for 2-3 decades if stored correctly. It's probably the white of the vintage.

    The Wine Independent (98)

A blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon, the 2020 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc opens with very serious scents of preserved lemons, kumquat, cedar, and chalk dust, leading to a fantastically fun undercurrent of passion fruit, orange blossoms, and sea spray. The palate is so, so tightly wound with tight-knit citrus, tropical, and mineral notes wrapped up in a silken-textured, racy frame, finishing with epic length and a whole firework display of minerals. What a fascinating wine!

    James Suckling (98-99)

This is always an impressive white, with a lengthy, layered and compact palate. Lots of dried lemon, clove, fennel, green-apple and cedar. Flint and toast, too. Medium to full body. Very long. 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon.

    James Suckling (99)

Very complex aromas of pears, persimmons, honey and cooked apples. Mineral undertones. Always subtle and multidimensional. Full-bodied with a tight and dense middle palate that gives a superb mouthfeel. It's lively and flavorful at the end but in a reserved way. Just a hint of bitter lemon and lilac. I really want to drink this, but give it three or four years to reach the right place.

    James Suckling (97-98)

This is layered and complex with an impressive mineral tension and depth. Medium- to full-bodied, very long and persistent. It has oyster shell, crushed stone and citrus peel character with racy acidity coming through, adding to its length and tension. Very long and firm at the end with a backbone of fine tannins for a white. 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92)

The 2022 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc does not have the bandwidth of La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc on the nose, slightly more malic, though it gains complexity in the glass, with touches of nettle and orange blossom emerging. The palate is slightly honeyed on the entry, a more powerful and sunny expression of the growing season, weighty with a pleasing oiliness and spiciness towards the finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

The 2019 L’Esprit de Chevalier has a lovely bouquet of blackberry, briar and hints of iodine and pressed iris flowers. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and just a little chewiness toward the finish that softens even in the glass. Lovely. Classic in style.

The 2021 L'Esprit de Chevalier has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry and raspberry fruit permeated with traces of oyster shell; hints of sea spray emerge with time. The medium-bodied palate delivers graphite-infused black fruit, moderate weight, fine salinity and insistent grip and mineralité on the finish. Classic Pessac.

The 2022 L'Esprit De Chevalier offers a spicy, complex profile with a supple, rounded texture and an elegant, balanced profile. Medium to full-bodied with fine tannins and an undeniably delicious style, it’s well worth buying and drinking over the coming decade or so.
