There are two barrels of the 2021 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru to go round this year. There is a bit of reduction on the nose, though it seems to have a similar aromatic profile to the spellbinding Chapelle-Chambertin with crystalline red fruit. The palate is fabulous: slightly grainy tannins that frame petite confit-like red fruit, a healthy dose of white pepper with a supremely well balanced finish that has superb backbone. One for keeping.$1,230.00 -

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Villages is superb, unfurling in the glass with a youthful bouquet of sweet cassis, wild berries and peony that mingles with subtle hints of candied peel, grilled meat and rich forest floor. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, pure and velvety, structured around a chassis of fine-grained tannins that will demand some bottle age, underpinned by bright acids and concluding with a strikingly fragrant finish. It's a beautiful wine that exemplifies the fragrant, precise style that Bertrand Dugat and his siblings are coaxing from their family's enviable patrimony of old and meticulously farmed vines.$481.00 -

All of the fruit is 100% destemmed, and fermentations take place in concrete tanks with gentle punch-downs twice a day, which they prefer over pump-overs to limit the amount of oxygen ingress. The juice is left in the tank for about two weeks before being racked to barrel for malolactic and ageing; the juice is left to settle for two days prior to being racked to barrel. A fair amount of new oak is used in the wines; the village wine, for example, is aged in 60% new François’ Frères oak barrels for an average of 16 months before bottling without filtration. Each label is a benchmark for quality, and they are often hallmarked by a generous and elegant style.
