The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a gleaming bouquet with transparent red cherry and white-tipped strawberries that contain such brightness and vivacity. There's wonderful mineralité both aromatically and on the palate, where one finds filigree tannins. Irresistibly pure and elegant. Arthur Clair told me that when he made this wine at the beginning of his career, his father, Bruno, quipped that he had made a Rosé, due to its pallid hue. Well, just goes to show!$1,300.00 -

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru offers pastille-like raspberry and cranberry fruit on the nose, touches of mulch and oyster shell. Altogether it forms an engaging bouquet that keeps the nose in glass. The palate is framed by fine boned tannin, the acidity nicely judged. The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle comes from the domaine's smallest holding at 0.25-hectares. It has a pure, tightly wound bouquet with black cherries and strawberry pastilles, floral tones emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is good nervosité here, tangible mineralité with impressive persistence on the finish. Very feminine and beguiling, this wine will only require a couple of years in bottle but it has the pedigree and substance to age with style.$193.00 -

It eventual does open up and offer attractive crushed strawberry, raspberry preserve and cold stone aromas, just a hint of incense developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, slightly meaty in style with a well-defined finish that needs more time to fully absorb the oak. Then juicier, more minerally and higher-pitched in the mouth; a step up in energy from the Clos du Fontenys, despite the fact that this vineyard is situated lower on the hillside. Not geologically logical, noted Bruno Clair--in much the same way that frost damage was often worse on the hillsides than on flat land and bewilderingly haphazard in general. Here there is sufficient reduction to blur the nuances of what are clearly floral-suffused red berry aromas. There is excellent freshness and verve to the intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that terminate in a linear, chiseled, austere and very serious finale.
