    Bernard Moreau

    About Bernard Moreau

Domaine Bernard Moreau a Chassagne-Montrachet estate producing wonderfully opulent Rouge and Blancs.  The domaine dates from 1809 when Auguste Moreau constructed a cellar in the region and began to cultivate grapes in the appellation.  The holdings were increased in the 1930s by descendent Marcel Moreau.  The current owner is Bernard Moreau, who took over in the early 1960s at the age of just 14!  Today, it is Bernard’s sons Alex and Benoît who lead the business.

    Vineyard and Winemaking

Domaine Bernard Moreau comprises 9 ha of vineyards with an additional 5ha (12 acres) famed under contract.  Most of this is in Chassagne-Montrachet, although there are also plots in Saint-Aubin and Volnay. The vines are old, yields are kept low and annual production only amounts to around 8,000 cases.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet La Maltroye 1er Cru has an intense, quite stony bouquet with more yellow flowers here, perfumed with light resinous scents. The palate is very well balanced with a sapid orange pith and white peach-tinged entry. Fine depth, a little richer towards the finish with a persistent aftertaste, this is another appealing wine from Alex Moreau.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru reflects its terroir brilliantly on the nose, which offers aromas of wet limestone and flint, beautifully defined and gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is wonderfully balanced with green apples, freshly sliced pear and just a touch of citrus lemon. This is taut, almost Zen-like in style – just as Caillerets ought to be. Superb.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru has more intensity on the nose than the Les Vergers, a little richer in style with touches of dried honey and wild peach. Fine delineation. The palate is well balanced with another quite citric entry, sharp and it sports just the right amount of bitterness, though perhaps the Les Vergers is more pixelated. Still, this is very fine.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)

5 Star Wine. An even lemon and lime colour. Energy on the nose, not yet so much detail. The palate delivers its usual resounding success, a mass of pure white fruit which builds in intensity to the back and finishes with the lightest of toasty notes which is complementary. Excellent length. Not only is this really good, there are 100 barrels of it!

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2019 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru has a little more depth and intensity compared to the Sur Gamay: green apples and wet limestone aromas unfolding nicely. The palate is very composed and harmonious, pretty, touches of blackcurrant leaf infusing the green apple notes that dovetail into peachy/grapefruit notes towards the concise finish. Very fine.

The 2018 Bourgogne Chardonnay, which had been bottled by the time of my visit, has a clean, precise apple blossom and citrus-scented bouquet that shows impressive definition for a generic white Burgundy. The palate is taut and fresh with a touch of bitter lemon on the entry, superb acidity and a saline finish. You will not find a better white Bourgogne Blanc in 2018.

Bottled in August the 2020 Bourgogne Chardonnay has an attractive nose with light citrus fruit, apple peelings and honeyuckle. The palate is well balanced with fine depth, slight pithy in style with hints of brioche and hazelnut on the finish. Closure: Diam

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes Rouge is made from a blend of 50-year-old vines; this sample came from tank. It has quite an intense black currant and bilberry scented bouquet. The crisp palate is well balanced with slightly chewy tannins, the 10% new oak just lending a little midpalate depth, and a little peppery thanks to the 30% whole cluster fruit (a little more than in previous years). Delicious.

    Vinous (87-89)

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has been in barrel for a year and transferred in tank in October. This has quite intense black cherry and cassis fruit on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, dark berry fruit laced with Earl Grey, quite weighty on the finish. This deserves a couple of years in bottle.
