Coming from vineyards in the northern part of the appellation that were planted in 2000 exclusively with Merlot, the first vintage of the San Walfredo was in 2016, but they didn’t produce it in 2017 or 2018, so this is the second vintage of this wine to be released. In the glass, it has a dark red/inky color, and the nose is lush with inviting aromas of red apples, cassis, polished leather, toasted cedar, incense, and lavender. Full-bodied, it fills the palate with the velvety and silky plushness of the coating texture, and it offers balanced, ripe, liqueur-like fruit and a long finish, with gentle accents of stony earth hiding underneath. It’s exceptional all around. Drink 2027-2050. 7272 bottles were produced.$305.00 -

The Marchesi Antinori 2023 Chianti Classico Pèppoli comes from a vintage with heat and rain that ultimately made for fresher wines compared to the darker and more concentrated wines from 2022. This versatile red wine shows aromas of cassis, cherry and orange peel. Sangiovese is blended with small percentages of Canaiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, depending on the year. The bouquet focuses nicely on red fruits, but there is a hint of sweet ripeness as well.$161.00 -

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vignaferrovia, a new bottling, is sweet, rich and layered in its fruit. This is a decidedly firm Brunello in need of a few years in the cellar to soften the firm yet refined tannins. Red raspberries, flowers and sweet spices are some of the nuances that emerge on the round, creamy finish. There is quite a bit of volume and richness, due in part to the greater use of French barrels, but the oak has also left the Riserva with some slightly oxidative qualities and less overall freshness than is typically the case here.$755.00 -

Ripe plum and black cherry fruits are somewhat overwhelmed by notes of mocha, tobacco and buttercream. It’s soft and silky in the mouth, showing sweet inner herbal tones, licorice and dark chocolate. The 2019 Pian delle Vigne Rosso di Montalcino wafts up with an intense display of peppery florals and crushed stone, giving way to masses of black cherry, hints of cocoa and sweet tobacco. The textures are silky and pliant, cast across a medium-bodied frame with ripe red and black berries, wrapped in a web of minerals and rounded tannins which slowly unfurl, making for a tactile feel of youthful tension. This is impressively long and structured for the category, but with primary fruit to match. Antinori really knocked it out of the park with their 2019 Rosso.$240.00 -

The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is dark yet perfumed, with lavender and violet tones giving way to masses of ripe plum and cherry. Balsam herbs and hints of chalk develop with time in the glass, adding further depths. This is silky and round, with juicy acidity enlivening its ripe red and hints of blue fruit. Sweet spices, hints of cocoa and licorice linger, as the 2020 tapers off long with just a hint of fine tannin. This showboat of a Rosso is going to win a lot of hearts.$215.00 -
