Good deep, lively red. Expressive, complex nose offers blueberry, strawberry, cinnamon, sassafras, old rare leather and iron. Then similarly complex on the supple palate, but with good energy and focus for such an easygoing, broad wine. The notes of red fruit and sweet spices linger nicely on the savory finish.$469.00 -

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from San Felice displays rich black cherry and plum with complements of sweet spice, cedar shavings and cooling mintiness. The textures are silky, ushing in a polished mix of red/black berries laced with salty minerals. It’s medium in body and youthfully compact; yet it is also showing a glimpse of what’s to come, as inner florals build over notes of licorice and cloves. A web of fine tannins coat all that they touch in youthful poise, as this tapers off with violet inflections. This is a very nice expression of the 2016 vintage form southern Montalcino.$427.00 -

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is remarkably pretty with a fruit-forward bouquet of wild strawberries, sweet rose and cinnamon spice. This is softly textured, with vibrant acidity that lends a juicy character as pepper-tinged red berries and sweet herbal tones resonate throughout. The palate is left watering, as a tug of silty tannins and a note of citrus-tinged sour cherry slowly fades. After a short stay in the cellar this zesty effort will provide gobs of pleasure.$374.00 -

Dark red cherries, plums, spices, mint, licorice and hard candy jump from the glass in the estate's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. Ripe, juicy and deeply expressive, the 2010 boasts stunning mid-palate density. Even with all of its immediacy and voluptuousness, the 2010 has enough structure to drink well for another 20+ years. The Canalicchio Brunellos always offer power, but the 2010 overlays tons of finesse to round things out.$93.00 -

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is stunning, finessed yet full of life, with bright cherry, sandalwood, shavings of cedar and dried Mediterranean herbs. It washes across the palate with a velvety mix of red currant and hints of balsamic spice, taking on a bit of a bitter twang toward the close. Hints of sour citrus and still slightly grippy tannins linger, as the 2012 shows its minerality, and hints of licorice slowly fade. I’d give the 2012 a few more years before really jumping in. It’s stunning.$444.00 -

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino from Canalicchio di Sopra - Ripaccioli is superb. The nose is dark and mineral-inflected with a blast of crushed raspberry, cherry and darker blackberry fruits wafting up from the glass, as sweet florals, underscored by moist soil and hints of cedar amass. On the palate, silky, almost creamy textures, offset by a stunning mix of salty-minerals and acids with savory herbs, and inner earth tones tempted the senses for another sip. The finish is remarkably long, resonating on minerals and dark fruits, almost balsamic and spicy, as its tannic structure comes forward and reminds me that this Brunello is still just a baby. What a gorgeous expression of Sangiovese.$117.00 -

The 2016 Brunello Di Montalcino leans into its more savory side at this stage, with leather, dried cherries, currants, and Mediterranean herbs supported by a bright note of blood orange. Medium to full-bodied, it still has plenty of lift on the palate, with ripe tannins, focused acidity, and a long, mouthwatering finish. It is already drinking well today, but it should continue to hold beautifully with time. Drink 2025-2040.$177.00 -

(1x150cl) 2017Vinous (95)
The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is wildly perfumed, dusty and exotic, with balsam herbs, savory spices, red currants and plums coming across as so pretty yet rich and potent. A silky display of sour wild berries contrasted by candied citrus wows the senses as the 2017 plays a zesty sweet-and-sour act upon the palate. It’s long, youthfully chewy, yet still remarkably fresh, with rosy florals and tart, tart cherries giving way to chiseled tannins through the finale. This is a beautiful rendition of the 2017 vintage, one that takes the dry warmth of the year and expresses it with tremendous energy and verve. What's more, I revisited this bottle over the course of 36 hours and it only got better with time.$248.00 -

Pouring a jeweled red/ruby color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is attractive and layered on the nose, with pure notes of red cherries, sweet Mediterranean herbs, crushed roses, and mossy earth. Medium-bodied, it brings lovely energy to the palate and is upfront with mouthwatering salty notes, snappy ripe acidity, and a clean, balanced finish, with even ripeness and stone-fruited notes of apricot on the back palate. This highly appealing Brunello is hard to resist now but likely has the ability to go the long haul over the coming 15-20 years.$293.00 -

A whiff of confectionary spice, violet pastille, blood orange and blackberry wafts up from the exotic 2017 Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia. This has found a lovely balance through bottle age, with soft and round textures, ripe wild berry fruits, inner florals and brisk acidity that enlivens the close. Its tannins emerge through the finish, angular and drying, yet maintaining freshness as a sour cherry tinge puckers the cheeks. While its bouquet shows the dry warmth of the vintage, the 2017 comes across as harmonious throughout.$367.00 -
