Piedmont
Piedmont, located in northwest Italy, is renowned for producing some of the world's most exquisite fine wines. With its breath-taking landscapes, diverse terroir, and a rich winemaking heritage, Piedmont offers a captivating range of wines that captivate the senses. The region is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that have gained global recognition for their exceptional quality.
One of the most famous vineyards in Piedmont is Gaja, a family-owned winery that has played a pivotal role in elevating the region's wines to international acclaim. Their wines, such as Barbaresco and Barolo, are synonymous with excellence and showcase the complexity and elegance of Piedmontese wines. Another esteemed vineyard is Vietti, known for its iconic Barolo wines that beautifully reflect the region's terroir and winemaking traditions.
Piedmont is renowned for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo grape. Barolo is often referred to as the "King of Wines" due to its full-bodied structure, intense aromatics, and potential for aging. Notable vineyards like Bruno Giacosa, Giacomo Conterno, and Paolo Scavino craft outstanding Barolo wines that capture the essence of the region. Barbaresco, a neighboring appellation, offers equally exceptional wines with a slightly softer and more approachable character. Renowned vineyards such as Produttori del Barbaresco and Gaja produce remarkable Barbaresco wines that exemplify the region's winemaking prowess.
Piedmont is also famous for its white wine, Moscato d'Asti, a sweet and aromatic wine made from the Moscato grape. Producers such as Michele Chiarlo and Saracco offer delightful Moscato d'Asti wines that are loved for their fragrant bouquet and refreshing sweetness.
Additionally, the region produces other notable wines, including Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, and Gavi. These wines exhibit unique characteristics that reflect the local terroir and grape varieties.
Piedmont's fine wines are a true expression of artistry and tradition, showcasing the region's commitment to excellence. Whether you're savoring a prestigious Barolo, an elegant Barbaresco, or a delightful Moscato d'Asti, Piedmont's wines offer a remarkable journey of flavors and a glimpse into the rich winemaking heritage of this captivating region.

Vinous (94)Things kicked up several notches with a flight of Barbareschis from the famed Asili vineyard. Asili is in the village of Barbaresco, where the wines are generally more feminine than in Neive. The best wines from this site have great aromatics and fine, silky tannins. The 2007 Barbaresco Asili was once again explosive. I expect the wine will settle down nicely with further bottle age, but at this stage lots of baby fat came through. |

Vinous (93)(white label): Captivating flower perfume lifts aromas of raspberry, menthol and mint. Seamless in texture but a bit youthfully imploded, offering terrific red fruit intensity without weight. Quite spicy for Asili. Nicely balanced, silky, floral Barbaresco, finishing with continuing spice notes as well as serious, building tannins for Asili. |

Vinous (94)The 2012 Barbaresco Asili is the finest wine I have tasted from Bruno Giacosa since the 2007 vintage. A bright, beautifully translucent red, the 2012 Asili captures the essence of this great site in its perfumed aromatics, silky fruit and understated depth. Hints of orange zest, rose petal, cinnamon and pine are laced into the resonant, alluring finish. Already quite open and expressive, the 2012 should drink well for the next decade or so. Giacosa fans will find much to admire in the sexy, open-knit 2012 Asili. This is a tremendous showing, and one of the very best 2012s readers will come across. |

James Suckling (97)There’s impeccable transparency and freshness to this Barbaresco on the nose, which introduces bright rose petals, lifted orange peel, crushed stones and sour cherries. The stoney tannins trace intricate detail on the medium-to full-bodied palate, highlighting the racy acidity, brambly undertones and a beautiful array of wild berries. Yes, there’s power and depth of flavor, but this is all about grace and beauty. Drink from 2024. |

Jeb Dunnuck (96)The team will not produce a 2022 Riserva release, and the 2022 Barbaresco Asili will be only release from Asili. From this cru with sandier soils, it was aged for 20 months in large barrels. In the glass, it boasts a jewel-toned ruby color and is fresh and ripe with aromas of pure raspberries, wild strawberries, rocky earth, and pressed roses. The palate is fruity and appealing, with refreshing lift, well-defined tannins, even acidity, and a kiss of stone fruit and mouthwatering salinity on the finish. It has just a hint of warmth, but it’s very well-balanced and joyful, making it a pretty vintage of this wine. Drink 2026-2050. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (99)The 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is just as magical as it has always been. Perfumed, light on its feet and supremely elegant, the 2004 dazzles from start to finish. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin suggest it will drink well for many years to come. All of the pure sensuality of Asili is on display. Bruno Giacosa achieved an unreal level of finesse in his wines that remains unmatched. |

James Suckling (99)This is an incredible wine that reminds me of the perfect 2000 Barolo Rocche de Falletto. Flowers, spices, leather and animals. Decadent. Dried mushrooms. Then changes to Japanese ginger and lemon peel. Full-bodied but refined and so long. It has layers of fruit and power. So refined. Ripe and intense. Perfect balance and harmony. It will be released in 2016. |

Jeb Dunnuck (97)The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili was aged for 20 months in barrel followed by two years in bottle. In this vintage (as in 2021), the weather conditions and the maturity of the grapes were evident in the vineyard, indicating that they would produce the red label Riserva bottling this year. (In other vintages, that decision has been made in the cellar.) In the glass, the wine displays a medium red transparent hue and offers fantastic layers of incense, Asian spices, fresh currants, and raspberries. The palate is elegant and refined, with a long, graceful feel. It’s very long on the palate, with a balanced, fruity feel, and its perfume lasts on the finish, featuring notes of apricot perfume. It's gorgeous already, but I would stash this away and check back in a few years. It’s deceptively approachable now but has the structure to age over the coming decades. This vintage reminds Bruna Giacosa of 2000, a vintage marked with similar elegance. |
