(vinified with 70% whole clusters; 40% new oak; 37 hectoliters per hectare produced): Dark bright red. Pure, vibrant aromas of black cherry, licorice and game, lifted by a floral tonote. Sappy, saline and intense, showing early sex appeal and balance to its high-pitched yet fully ripe dark fruit and licorice flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and very good length. (Incidentally, Groffier's Bourgogne Pinot Noir, frequently an outperformer for its modest appellation, is a potential knockout in 2013. Aromas of ripe black raspberry, violet and game lead to a sweet, lush palate that shows serious muscle and cut to the spicy dark fruit flavors.)$1,480.00 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru is deeper in color than its peers. There is a slight reduction here but underneath lies some very fine raspberry and black plum fruit, though it needs to demonstrate more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin and then it seems to run out of ideas towards the finish and finishes a little uninspired. Hmm ... this is a Chambertin outclassed by some of Rossignol-Trapet's less revered crus at the moment. Though it remains a very fine 2013, it falls short of how I expected it to perform given its splendid showing in barrel. Tasted September 2016.$298.00 -

The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, gentle and yet harmonious with gorgeous mulberry and red plum fruit, underneath which lies very fine mineralité. Explosive on the back end, saturating the mouth and exciting the salivary glands. Finishes with terrific late spicy lift. This wonderfully perfumed, classy wine needs time. It has blossomed on the nose with charming redcurrant, Morello and tertiary scents, a subtle damp moss and undergrowth aroma gradually becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a palpable sense of energy and impressive precision towards the finish that leaves the mouth tingling with glee afterwards. This is quite earthy and even more intensely sauvage with its deeply pitched nose of dark berry fruit, smoked meat and herbal tea hints. There is fine volume to the tautly muscular medium weight flavors that are robust to the point of being chewy on the overtly rustic finale. This powerful effort is presently markedly firm and will definitely require extended bottle age to soften the stiff tannic spine. Recommended provided you have the patience to allow it at least a decade of cellar time.$551.00 -

This is quite densely fruited with an unusually expressive mélange of violet, plum, red and black currant, tea and plenty of earth elements. There is very fine volume and plenty of power to the reasonably well-detailed and muscular flavors that delivers outstanding length on the youthfully austere and saline suffused finish. While I envision that markedly more depth will develop there is enough underlying material present that if it does then my predicted score may very well be too conservative as this is very good.
