Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru is deeper in color than its peers. There is a slight reduction here but underneath lies some very fine raspberry and black plum fruit, though it needs to demonstrate more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin and then it seems to run out of ideas towards the finish and finishes a little uninspired. Hmm ... this is a Chambertin outclassed by some of Rossignol-Trapet's less revered crus at the moment. Though it remains a very fine 2013, it falls short of how I expected it to perform given its splendid showing in barrel. Tasted September 2016.$298.00 -

This powerful effort is presently markedly firm and will definitely require extended bottle age to soften the stiff tannic spine. There is very fine volume and plenty of power to the reasonably well-detailed and muscular flavors that delivers outstanding length on the youthfully austere and saline suffused finish. While I envision that markedly more depth will develop there is enough underlying material present that if it does then my predicted score may very well be too conservative as this is very good. It has plenty of sappy black fruit, good structure, but needs a little more flesh and persistence on the bay-leaf infused finish. Once again, 2013 was a difficult vintage for the winemakers of Burgundy, but those who were patient and meticulous produced wines of excellent quality. The spring was cold and wet which led to late and uneven flowering. Conditions worsened with a hailstorm in late July which hit areas of Savigny, Beaune, Volnay and Meursault in particular, but a warm and dry August helped fruit to ripen at a critical time. The best of the white wines are truly exceptional in 2013 due to their refreshing acidity which perfectly balanced the impressive purity of of fruit. While the reds were overall less acclaimed than the whites, they showed elegance and sheer drinkability due to their freshness and depth of fruit.
