  • Troplong Mondot 2000 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Extremely young with an unbelievable deep purple color, the 2000 Troplong Mondot has hardly budged since I tasted it in 2003. Two recent tastings confirmed that this is the greatest Troplong Mondot between their profound 1990 and more recent vintages such as 2005, 2008, and 2009. Copious chocolate, graphite, blackberry, blueberry, cassis, and ink characteristics are present in this full-bodied, powerful, massive St.-Emilion. While the tannins are noticeable, they are better integrated than they were seven years ago, and the fruit, extract, and richness clearly outweigh the wine's structure. This 2000 will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring (longer than I originally predicted), and has at least two decades of drinkability ahead of it.

  • Trotanoy 2000 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (98)

Deep garnet-hued with just a kiss of bricking, the 2000 Château Trotanoy comes from one of my favorite châteaux and is a remarkably complex effort with ripe black fruits, smoked tobacco, iron, and graphite-driven aromatics. It's full-bodied on the palate and has a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, sweet, polished tannins, ample mid-palate volume, and a gorgeous finish. I don't think it quite matches the otherworldly 1998, but this is an absolutely riveting Trotanoy to enjoy over the coming 15+ years. Drink 2026-2041.

  • Valandraud 2000 (12x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (96)

A Merlot-heavy blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, the 2000 Château Valandraud is a classic 2000 with its focused, structured style. It offers beautifully ripe red and black fruits, smoky tobacco, chocolatey and graphite nuances, and a beautiful sense of minerality on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a focused, layered mouthfeel, the structure, tannins, and acidity of the vintage, and a great finish. It's mature yet has the tension and depth to evolve gracefully, and I would wager this is the finest wine produced by Jean-Luc since the debut here. Drink 2026-2041.

Another example that Nature has some regard for the creations of man, with the 2000 vintage offering a grand final bow for the Millennium. To describe the weather as other than perfect would be near folly, as the harvest went off without a hitch. The Merlot came off midway through September and a touch of rain in October allowed the Cabernet to hang on a bit longer before being harvested at perfect phenolic ripeness. The Left Bank has the edge but in truth there is little between the Medoc and Libournais in such a good year!
