The 1995 Beau-Séjour Bécot was picked between 25 September and 5 October. It has a straight-laced bouquet with earthy red berry fruit, tobacco and a light touch of peppermint. The aromatics feel pinched and do not quite “flow” in the same manner as more recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with soft and rounded tannin, quite muscular in the mouth and good volume. What it misses is delineation and tension, the complexity that more recent vintages have conveyed. It feels a little blunt in comparison even though admittedly it has survived well for 22 years. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated on the palate, it has terrific mid-palate depth, flawless balance, background oak, and polished yet significant tannins. If you want to know what limestone soil gives to a wine, try this! It has the polish and balance to offer pleasure today, yet the cellar will be your friend.
