Decanter (97)

Coffee, tobacco and oak on the nose. The palate is juicy and balanced with pronounced blackcurrant and smoke spice. There's a good expression of black fruit on the finish.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (89)

The 2018 Chapelle de Potensac is bright, perfumed and very nicely lifted, with plenty of red berry, dried leaves and floral character. Silky and light on its feet, the Chapelle is a gorgeous, refined Left Bank red to drink over the next decade. There is lovely 2018 raciness to the fruit and impeccable balance to round things out.

Vinous - Neal Martin (86)

The 2019 Chapelle de Potensac has a light but agreeable cherryade and crushed strawberry nose, nicely defined and straightforward. The palate is ripe on the entry with slightly chewy tannins, but I find this a little short in the scheme of things, leaving me wanting more.

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2016 Le Boscq, owned by Vignobles Dourthe, is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot and was picked 29 September until 20 October. This represents a move towards Cabernet Sauvignon and away from Merlot in the final blend. It has a very ripe, opulent bouquet that does not quite convey its terroir with the same aplomb as say, the Phelan-Ségur. It translates more of the winemaking than the terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, crisp acidity and quite an elegant finish. It is in the second half of this wine that the quality of the vintage shows through. Hopefully the aromatics will gain more composure and it will live up to the finish it currently displays. One to watch.

The 2014 Les Grands Chênes is plump, juicy and accessible, all of which make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. In 2014, Les Grands Chênes is on the more delicate side of things, but it is nevertheless very nicely done. Hints of licorice and lavender add nuance to the dark-toned flavors. The 2014 is delicious now, but it will develop more complexity over time. Tasted two times.

Bernard Magrez's 2019 Les Grands Chênes is seriously impressive. Deep, layered and complex, the 2019 is full of character. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, mint, new leather, licorice, cedar and iron all take shape in the glass. The long creamy finish. There is a lot of wine here, especially for the money. In a word: fabulous!

From ancient and predominantly ungrafted vines, Clos Manou's 2021 Cuvée 1850 Vignes Prephylloxeriques was matured in equal parts new oak and glass wine globes. Unwinding in the glass with notes of minty berries, violets, rose petals and lilac, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered and concentrated mid-palate, ripe tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, pure finish. In a blind tasting, this could cause serious problems for more than a few top-classified growths, but that's hardly surprising when one has seen Dief's impeccable vineyard work and spotlessly maintained winery.

The 2021 Clos Manou is supple, racy and super-expressive. A burst of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, spice and lavender lend quite a bit of up front intensity. Clos Manou is beautifully done in 2021. It is sure to find many fans.

A fruity, accessible red, the Merlot-based 2013 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel jumps from the glass with sweet red berries, tobacco, flowers and spices. This is a very pretty, silky red from Cos d'Estournel with good near term potential and plenty of vintage 2013 brightness.

The 2020 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is perfumed and silky in the glass. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and crushed flowers lend attractive aromatic presence. This is an especially gracious style that feels a bit light, especially on the mid-palate and finish, where there is some loss of persistence.
