Approachable and long, the 2018 Barbaresco Paje boasts ripe tannins with a plush texture and displays a light rustic side, with ripe black raspberries, fresh flowers, and a rounded feel on the palate. It is long through the finish, with good ripeness in this vintage. Very approachable, it can be enjoyed now and over the next 15 years.$888.00 -

A bright, transparent, youthful ruby color, the 2018 Barbaresco Paje Vecchie Viti is more intense on the nose and concentrated with aromas of rustic cherries, saddle leather, crushed roses, and fresh earth. Coming from vines as old as 90 years (compared to 50 years for the other Paje bottling), it offers fantastic structure, with velvety rich tannins, a delicate warmth on the finish, and a lot of length. It really steps up the game here. Drink 2026-2046.$1,045.00 -

Located next to Rocche di Castiglione, the Roagna family has the monopoly on the Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. Luca Roagna's parents bought this plot in 1990,m and vine age varies from 35 to 60 years old. Different soils types are spread throughout the parcels. The 2019 Barolo Pira shows a beautiful mineral note with a metallic side that comes through with blazing intensity. It matches earthy sensations and pretty floral notes. This is a wine of exceptional depth and luminosity.$929.00 -

The Roagna 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione comes from a 0.49-hectare parcel that was purchased in 2016. The vineyards lay adjacent to Pira, thus opening the possibility for the Roagna family to buy this land. The vines average 50 years old, and the plan is to eventually have this wine join the Vecchie Viti series. Because this is only the fourth year of production, that remains a goal for the future. This distinctive site, one of my personal favorites in the Barolo appellation, always delivers special sharpness and linear focus. You get that here along with a very long finish. The wine has muscle, but it also shows supple roundness and ample fruit weight. This is a wine to watch.$1,015.00 -

A beautiful grenache, clarity its watchword: colour, aroma, varietal expression and aftertaste. Perfumed red berries of every description flow through the light to medium-bodied palate where pomegranate is foremost in shaping mouthfeel and flavour. Irresistible now or in 10 years hence.$268.00 -

Gentle first impression, almost a touch floral – lavender? herbal? – spicy and biscuity too. Broader than the 2002 and less intense, not as concentrated on the mid palate but a little broader, less tightly wound, as you would expect. Still vey finely balanced and creamily textured. Amazingly long finish.$2,640.00 -

Starting off a bit shy and closed at first, the 2015 Barolo Ravera showed noticeably better in the sample that had been opened a few hours prior to my arrival at the winery for my annual visit. This makes perfect sense as Vietti’s wines are intentionally slow at first but are built to endure the long haul. From the Novello township, this vineyard site is recognized for it power, structure and the uniquely broad approach it shows to the palate. There is a larger span of black fruit at its core. The positioning of the Ravera cru means it is open to the elements and the cold air from the Alps, and the wines result in freshness and mineral character as well. Luca Currado describes a salty, anchovy-like aroma that does indeed appear. Otherwise, this wine shows tightly polished and glossy tannins.$732.00
