Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Pale lemon colour. Not so intense on the nose, but it certainly is on the palate. On the one hand with a very pure stony backbone, on the other the oak (30%) is quite present at the finish, arguably a fraction too much to suit the character of Vaillons. There is undeniable persistence, though, as the fruit keeps on coming back, and the oak will surely fade into the background. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Jun 2024.$1,294.07 -
Burghound (92)
(from vines planted in 1933 in Vaillons proper). A slightly cooler and smoky nose reflects notes of white pepper and a touch of the exotic while the wood treatment, while subtle, is a bit more noticeable. The old vines are in evidence as the mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is markedly denser as the sappy extract coats the palate while buffering the moderately firm acid spine shaping the very dry, more complex and slightly long finale. Lovely.$1,335.02 -

Lemon colour with light green tints. A relatively classic nose, quite concentrated, with a generous orchard fruit plus hints of the marine element. The fruit side of this is accessible, the structure says hold on. Will this tighten up further? Finishes with a comfortable marine density. Excellent Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted Jun 2024.$1,274.06 -

A glowing lemon and lime colour, really delicious. Immaculate precision on the nose, as steely as they come. Excellent tension, the purest of white fruits, just a little cream behind which is a sign of concentration, supported in this case by really well-judged oak. Huge ageing potential. Youthful bitters in the best way. Drink from 2030-2045. Tasted Jun 2024.$1,294.07 -

(3x150cl) 2022Vinous (95-97)
The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru, which was taken from tank where it will stay until February, is the final vintage before one significantly contributing parcel was pulled up. The perfumed bouquet has yellow plum and touches of pistachio, crushed stone and a touch of wild mint. The beautifully balanced palate has a velvety texture and a fine bead of acidity, very precise, with an utterly delectable persistent finish. One of Moreau's strongest cuvées (as usual) - not to be underestimated.$1,268.42 -

Pale lemon colour. The bouquet is taking its time, but the natural balance of this vineyard is apparent. Despite the discretion there is a wonderful intensity of very pure white fruit. Only the lightest dusting of coconut. The salinity reinforces the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted Jun 2024.$1,294.07 -

Though separated out a few years earlier, this cuvée has been offered as Les Pargues with a wax capsule from 2020. Pale colour with a delicious floral yet fresh nose. This is very classic and benefits from the extra elevage. Straight on the limestone, with lemon juice squirted over the oyster shells. Naturally reductive and that factor is lightly woven in. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted Jun 2024.$332.00 -
(6x75cl) 2022Burghound (93)
(from 78+ year old vines totaling .31 ha with .125 ha in Charmes and the other .18 ha in Mazoyères). Soft wood is present on the even spicier mix of ripe red and dark currant that is cut with game, earth, humus and forest floor nuances. There is impressive volume and concentration to the broad-shouldered flavors that exhibit good power and muscle on the compact and palate coating finish that goes on and on. This is potentially superb but it is definitely a wine to ‘buy and forget’ in the back of a cool cellar.$1,268.42 -

Claire Naudin Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes 2022 is a finely etched red Burgundy from France, sourced in the Nuits-Saint-Georges sub-region and crafted with the exacting, low-intervention approach for which Claire Naudin is widely recognised. In the cellar, Naudin favours minimal handling and a measured use of oak, aiming to preserve site character and aromatic precision rather than impose a house style. My allegiance chez Dugat is almost always to the Griotte-Chambertin, but this year, it was the 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru that dominated in our tasting. Soaring from the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of sweet berries, cherries and plums mingled with licorice and smoke, it's full-bodied, velvety and multidimensional, with a deep core of rich, vibrant, concentrated fruit framed by beautifully refined tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish.$1,268.42 -
