Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

(3x75cl) 2022Decanter (98)
This superb offering has everything one can hope for from this appellation, yet it is a model of understated elegance. Initially with floral and spicy fruit intensity, the texture is silky and approachable, yet substantial extract and firm tannins make themselves felt on the long finish. Grapes are from the domaine’s 0.36ha plot in Les Gémeaux at the base of the Clos de Bèze slope. Despite its approachable nature, this has the substance to age for decades. Biodynamic.$5,453.00 -

(1x75cl) 2022Decanter (97)
This seductive wine appeals along the same lines as the Beaumonts, yet there is more of everything – more lush, dark blackberry and plum fruit, more liquorice spice on the attack, and more density and tannic grip on the palate. The texture is velvety and dense, yet there is also great finesse and a concentrated, focused finish. The grapes come from two biodynamically farmed parcels in Echézeaux du Dessus. This wine should open relatively young and drink well for two decades or more. This is a magnificent wine in a great vintage.$1,308.88 -

In the cellar, Tremblay is known for working with great care and restraint, favouring gentle handling and élevage that supports, rather than masks, terroir expression. The 2022 Corton Blanc Grand Cru is three-quarters from "Les Bressandes" and one-quarter from "Corton Chaumes". Funnily enough, de Nicolay's parents were planting this parcel in the 1980s, but the nursery had run out of Pinot Noir, so they planted Chardonnay instead (Good thing they didn't just have Ugni Blanc left on the shelves). Pineapple chunks open the nose—this is ripe and a little exotic, as it usually tends to be. The palate is rounded on the entry with pineapple and yellow plum notes, a bit low in acidity with a slightly honeyed finish. This is an early-drinking Corton Blanc.$1,815.00 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
5 Star Wines A beautiful full fresh purple. The nose is exquisite even in the large-scale eyes of the vintage. This is a luxurious and noble Beaune with very good acidity. The deep, dark raspberry fruit absolutely fills the palate, the tannins still need to refine with the second half of the elevage but the finish promises a very fine wine. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.$457.00 -
(6x75cl) 2022Decanter (96)
This delicious white Corton has an almost Montrachet-like richness and depth of flavour, with its aromas of ripe apple, quince, cream and spice. The texture is luxurious, almost decadent, but the balanced acidity and extract carry it to an alluringly long finish. The domaine owns 0.65 hectares down the slope from Le Rognet et Corton in Ladoix that face due east; the grapes are carefully sorted, pressed as whole clusters, and fermented in cask (one-quarter new). This wine should open nicely in five years and will drink well for a further 20.$588.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
An even fuller yellow and an even more luxuriant nose, as Clos des Mouches cannot help. I still haven’t understood just why this vineyard should make such opulent, creamily textured wines. The oak is for me just a little bit too present but it should sort itself out after a light bentonite fining and filtering. Good acidity. Plenty of wine to work with here! Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.$581.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)
A fine bright purple. Concentrated raspberry with a bit of strawberry. There is a more graceful rounded character to the fruit here, a certain succulence into which the oak blends very well. This has a fine sense of harmony and will make an agreeable bottle in the not too distant future. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023.$428.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
Mid yellow. The Folatières shows depth of fruit more than the floral side of Puligny. The palate offers several layers of fruit, ripe apple though with a crunchy side, and a light citrus. Overall, this makes a fine and substantial Folatières. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.$607.00 -
